Jazz | Individual, Confidently Feminine Jazz -- Outdoors

Born to an American mother and a concert-promoter Brazilian father, Alexia Bomtempo was raised in the beach culture of Rio de Janeiro, while traveling to America frequently over the years. She grew up listening to Brazilian popular music and Bossa Nova, as well as rock, folk and jazz. Since relocating back to New York City, the Brazilian-American singer-songwriter has fully embraced, challenged, and redefined the Northern half of her American artistic roots. Equally comfortable wandering amidst hazy memory-inducing soundscapes as she is in delivering flowing melodies influenced by her beachside upbringing in Rio de Janeiro, Alexia is an artist of of multiple worlds. Her sound is individual and confidently feminine, navigating genres ranging from classic American song to exploratory Tropicália. In 2008, she began touring throughout Brazil, Europe, Japan and the U.S in support of her debut release Astrolábio (EMI Brazil).

In this deeply observed, excruciatingly blunt novel, Olga, a middle-aged wife and mother, is plunged into a breakdown after her husband leaves her for a younger woman. Opening Reception | Holding: Group Show

A joint summer group exhibition that unites an esteemed ensemble of women and non-binary artists of different backgrounds, generations, and artistic traditions. As a unifying theme, the act of holding serves as an evocative lens where abstract interrogations of the physical and cultural experiences of womanhood are observed. The artists interrogate the role of women as builders, archivists, preservers. The subjects of these works are depicted in a multitude of roles, from carriers of human cultural traditions to vital supports for the natural world. These interrogations of gender and womanhood are as mystical as they are corporeal. Meditative abstract works by artists such as Jackie Saccoccio, Theresa Daddezio, and Maria Stabio will be included in the exhibition alongside figurative works by Judy Chicago, Lorraine O'Grady, and Emma Amos, each of whom express their understanding of gender through an embodied physicality of subject. Twenty-one artists will be included in the group exhibition.

Concert | Music and Art Under the Arch

Zabelê is the daughter of two of the biggest names in the Brazilian popular music scene: the couple Baby do Brasil and Pepeu Gomes, the main artists of the libertarian and revolutionary group Novos Baianos, from the 1970s, and one of the most impressive groups in Brazilian music. The awakening of a musical career happened in New York, while she lived in the city to study dance, her first passion. Under the influence–and persistence–of a group of friends who played at a venue in the Village, Jack Florczyk is an American contemporary fine artist born in Teaneck, New Jersey in 1992 and currently based in Brooklyn. Working primarily with acrylic paint, Jack’s work is described as figurative expressionism. As a self-taught artist, Jack is always experimenting with new techniques and is heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement, the 1970s and 80s street-art culture, sports, and hip-hop. He has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Miami and has representation through the White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton, New York and Beacon Art Shortwave Gallery in Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

Book Discussion | Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell

England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on. A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Talk | Bagels To Bhajis: London's Ever-Changing Jewish East End (online)

Dive into the history of the Jewish East End with London guide Rachel Kolsky. The history of Whitechapel and Spitalfields between the middle of the nineteenth century to the current day is one of constant change and transformation. Associated very much with the Jewish community, the area has also been home to several other immigrant communities such as the Huguenots escaping persecution in seventeenth-century France and the Bengalis whose community grew dramatically after the Second World War. This virtual tour will take you back in time to set the scene with previous Jewish communities of Medieval times, the expulsion in 1290 and the Resettlement in 1656. By the mid nineteenth century there was a considerable Jewish community to the east of the city where they established not just places of worship but charities, schools, old age homes, soup kitchens, and hospitals. When the vast numbers of Jewish refugees arrived from Russia and Poland starting in the 1880s, the Jewish community was able to provide for their needs for shelter, work, and food. At its height there were around 125,000 Jewish people crowded into an area of barely two square miles on what became known as the Jewish East End. This Jewish community may no longer live in Spitalfields, but the streets and buildings in and around Brick Lane still evoke memories of the nineteenth and early twentieth-century synagogues, schools, and soup kitchens. Now you’ll find food outlets, markets, and contemporary street art. From being a place that everyone aspired to leave, it is now one of London’s trendiest neighborhoods. Speaker Rachel Kolsky is a popular social historian, prize-winning London Blue Badge Tourist Guide and author.

Concert | Indie-Experimental Sounds -- Outdoors

Vagabon's first album, 2017's Infinite Worlds, was an indie breakthrough that put her on the map, prompting the artist to tour around the world and quit her job in electrical/computer engineering to pursue a career in music full-time. Her self-titled Nonesuch Records debut finds her in a state of creative expansion, leaning fully into some of the experimental instincts she flirted with on the previous album. This time around, she's throwing genre to the wind. Vagabon is a vibrant culmination of influences, emotional landscapes, and moods; a colorful and masterful statement by an artist and producer stepping into her own.   She's joined by a consortium of friends, who sing along with her over a trembling string arrangement. "At dawn, I'll be home soon," they affirm in unison. "Home has always been a major theme in my music, and when I say I make music for outcasts, I am also talking about those who feel far from home or uncomfortable where they're at," Tamko says. "To me, home isn't a physical space so much as it is a mental state. I'm writing about wanting to feel safe and at home in my body and in my mind and in the community I move in. I want Vagabon to be a project that people searching for the same thing can connect with." After her debut EP release in July 2021, opening act Jayla Kai is sharing a new and different release, The Short Song Project. Primarily self-produced and developed with a couple of close collaborators, the project is preserved as it was conceived: jagged, unique and personal. The Short Song Project is about play, exploring Kai’s inner world with unconstrained openness and inviting everybody in.

Book Discussion | Nothing Special: Navigating Andy Warhol (online)

Nicole Flattery’s highly anticipated debut novel is set in the electric atmosphere of New York City in the 1960s. Nothing Special is a subversive story about Mae and Shelley, teenagers navigating the complex world of Andy Warhol’s Factory. Tasked with transcribing conversations between Warhol and his enigmatic entourage for his novella obscura, Mae’s obsessive voyeurism at the frontlines of the ’60s countercultural movement numbs her to her own reality. Flattery will be joined by novelist, short-story writer, and cultural critic Lynne Tillman for a ventilation of this whip-smart coming-of-age story that brings to life the timeless, tender, and mordantly funny experience of young women carving out their identity during this iconic moment in history.

Book Discussion | The Absolutes: From Love to Insanity

Molly Dektar's arresting, seductive novel is about one woman's headlong dive into a reckless affair that leaves her teetering on the edge of sanity. When Nora, a withdrawn American teenager, is sent to live with relatives in Turin, she meets Nicola, the enigmatic son of the most powerful aristocratic family in Italy. Years later, the two reconnect in New York and begin a heated affair. Propelled by disorienting desire, Nora quickly becomes entangled in Nicola's insular, menacing world of old-world luxury and family secrets. When she suspects she's being used in a secret plot to overthrow his corrupt father, Nora willfully turns submissive to Nicola, pushing against the boundaries of her own moral limits until she finds herself spiraling on a path of self-destruction. The Absolutes is a searing, subversive examination of manipulation, obsession, and sexual desire. With unsparing intrigue and ferocity, Dektar proves herself to be one of the most ambitious writers working today.

Jazz | Acclaimed Tenor Saxophonist Plays in the Park

Houston Person, born in Newberry, South Carolina in 1934, is the natural heir to the Boss Tenor crown worn so long and so well by Gene Ammons. During his stellar career working as a bandleader, Person has taken his music to most points on the globe. A travelling Jazzman in an era that has found that particular species a veritable rara avis, Person is a"Renaissance Jazzman. One of the last proponents of the big sound, his tone has gotten bigger even as his delivery has mellowed and rounded out. And, of course, with Person you are likely to hear almost anything in terms of repertoire. He has recorded disco and gospel, pop and R&B in addition to his natural Jazz but beyond that he has an enormous and ever changing book.
