Opening Reception | Daniel Handal: Engaños

“Engaños” (Spanish for “deceptions” or “illusions”), draws inspiration from Joris-Karl Huysmans’ 1884 literary classic Against the Grain, which explores themes of individuality, nonconformity, and authenticity. The novel, a seminal work of Decadent literature, centers on Jean des Esseintes, a reclusive aesthete who attempts to create a perfect, artificial world for himself. As part of his experiment, he collects artificial flowers that appear to be natural. Later, as his intel- lectual curiosity progresses, des Esseintes starts seeking out natural flowers that appear to have been artificially made. Handal’s project takes this concept a step further by presenting flowers as optical illusions, blurring the line between reality and representation.

Concert | Neo-Soul Artist Kelela Headlines One-of-a-Kind Sound (In a Park)

A seamless interpolator of music, art, and fashion, Kelela headlines a night of music sure to be as transcendent and kaleidoscopic as the wide breadth of her talents. Divinity, sonic elegance, and futurism define Kelela's one-of-a-kind sound. The opener, neo-soul artist Liv.e, grew up in a family of musicians, embedded in the gospel scene. Her experimental production and immersive storytelling is a beautiful nod to her musical lineage. About the Artists Skillfully straddling the frequencies of R&B and dance/club music, American singer, songwriter, and producer Kelela has established herself as an artistic interpolator of music, art, and fashion. In 2017, Kelela's debut album, Take Me Apart, accelerated her inevitable rise to mainstream acclaim in both pop and underground culture. In the years prior, Cut 4 Me (2013) and Hallucinogen (2015) - among her other remix projects and features - cemented her artistry as a leading force in the alternative, underground R&B world. With a personal style as visually kaleidoscopic as her genre-wielding music, Kelela has established herself as a vanguard of sonic and aesthetic innovation. Thoughtfully intermixing elegance, futurism, divinity, and sensuality, Kelela's unique perspective has carved a lane that demonstrates style as both a component of art, and art in and of itself. Liv.e, pronounced "Liv," is a 23 year old producer and singer/songwriter who mixes facets of R&B, jazz, soul, and hip-hop to create a sound that is wholly her own. Coupling her hypnotic voice and unique writing over textured loops and sun soaked production, Liv.e makes songs that are both eclectic and timeless. While it's difficult to label Liv.e's music under one genre or scene, it is born out of production based on samples pulled from vinyl in Dallas record shops, southern rap, and her upbringing in Dallas. Her most recent release Couldn't Wait to Tell You... is celebrating its year anniversary. Doors open at 6:30pm For Deaf and hard of hearing communities, there will be an ASL interpreter at the left side of the stage.
