Discussion | First Listen: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy at the Village Gate

In the early 60s, John Coltrane and his band sounded different on stage versus on a studio recording. Live tracks recorded at the Village Gate, a venue in New York, during Coltrane's residency there in 1961 capture the new sounds he was pioneering, but those recordings were never published. Recently, the recordings were unearthed by researchers. The new tracks are part of a forthcoming album coming out July 14, called Evenings at the Village Gate: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy. Hear the story of how the recordings were discovered, and get a preview of the album. The album will be played from beginning to end in an open listening session. Then, musicians Brandee Younger and Lewis Porter, and music critic Ben Ratliff will join a discussion hosted by music journalist Marcus J. Moore about the album. Reservation required.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour

A guided tour of the Tide Deck for a unique river ecology experience. The design for pier is inspired by Manhattan’s natural shoreline prior to European colonization in the 17th century. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is on the Tide Deck, which is an engineered rocky tidal marsh located on the western end of the pier. The Tide Deck ebbs and floods with our daily tidal cycle and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Tours are offered every 30 minutes.

Opening Reception | 3 Art Exhibition Openings

Upcoming exhibitions, Sarah Blaustein: Central Feeling, Devra Fox: Limbs, and Kristyna and Marek Milde: Conductive Fields. Known for her brightly hued, gesturally abstract compositions of acrylic and ink, Blaustein approaches her painterly practice as a meditative kind of ritual, initiated by filling a jug full of water. A conduit both for her pigments and pronouncements, water functions as a dynamic medium that the artist manipulates between sponge soaks and brush strokes, negotiating at each turn with its fluid and fugitive properties. Rendered with hyper-realistic precision, Devra Fox’s graphite drawings of anthropomorphized plant forms muse on notions of containment outside of the body. In seamlessly grafting anatomical features like spinal vertebrae or arterial chambers with vegetal offshoots, she extends the metaphor of the vessel beyond the somatic. Kristyna and Marek Milde’s cross-disciplinary practice spanning sculpture, photography, and installation mines an ever-evolving, anthropocentric landscape, its systems of power and communication in relationship to the natural world that may affect one’s connection to a place. Across its myriad manifestations, from the geographic to the architectural, the home lies at the center of their inquiry, providing a tangible framework where social, economic, and ecological issues collide in the context of the everyday.

Book Discussion | Cult Classic: Literary Fantasy

One night in New York City's Chinatown, a woman is at a work reunion dinner when she excuses herself to buy a pack of cigarettes. On her way back, she runs into a former boyfriend. And then another. And... another. What would normally pass for coincidence becomes something far stranger as our heroine, the recently engaged Lola, must contend with a great many of her relationships. Memories of the past swirl and converge in ways both comic and eerie, as Lola is forced to decide if she will surrender herself to the conspiring of one very contemporary cult. In her book, Sloane Crosley spins a wry literary fantasy that is equal parts page-turner and poignant portrayal of alienation.

Book Discussion | The Sullivanians: Sex, Psychotherapy, and the Wild Life of an American Commune

Alexander Stille launches his book about the devolution of the Sullivan Institute, from psychoanalytic organization to insular, radical cult. In the middle of the Ozzie and Harriet 1950s, the birth control pill was introduced and a maverick psychoanalytic institute, the Sullivan Institute for Research in Psychoanalysis, opened its doors in New York City. Its founders, Saul Newton and Jane Pearce, wanted to start a revolution, one grounded in ideals of creative expression, sexual liberation, and freedom from the expectations of society, and the revolution, they felt, needed to begin at home. Dismantling the nuclear family—and monogamous marriage—would free people from the repressive forces of their parents. In its first two decades, the movement attracted many brilliant, creative people as patients: the painter Jackson Pollock and a swarm of other abstract expressionist artists, the famed art critic Clement Greenberg, the singer Judy Collins, and the dancer Lucinda Childs. In the 1960s, the group evolved into an urban commune of three or four hundred people, with patients living with other patients, leading creative, polyamorous lives.

Jazz | French Chanson, Hot Jazz and Bop

Brooklyn-based chanteuse and jazz manouche specialist Tatiana Eva-Maria name-checks the famous Parisian Festival Jazz a Saint-Germain-des-Pres, a hothouse for the modern romantic jazz era of performance, with an evening of social dance evoking the soundtrack of the 1940s Latin Quarter. Renowned for her work as the lead vocalist for NYC's own Avalon Jazz Band, Eva-Marie has become an emissary for the sound of metropolitan France in the 1930s and '40s, where swing was an act of freedom for the rebellious young zazous of wartime Paris. Behind a repertoire of French chanson, hot jazz, and bop inspired by such luminaries as Django Reinhardt and Cole Porter, Tatiana and her combo will fill the dance floor with a musical mix of youthful nostalgia and irreverent joy.

Dance Performance | Street Dance Theater (In a Park)

Rennie Harris Puremovement Street Dance Theater will perform Nuttin' But a Word, with an opening performance by Decora. Harris, born and raised in Philadelphia, is one of the art form's leading ambassadors and believes that any story of hip-hop without dance is incomplete. Opener Decora uses the art of language and visual art to create an entirely new medium of expression, blending electronic music, rap, and poetry in his compelling performances. About the Artists Rennie Harris Puremovement Street Dance Theater's Nuttin' But a Word is an acclaimed work that pushes the boundaries of street dance vocabulary. It forces its audience to view street dance through a different lens. Challenging the viewer's perspective of street dance or hip-hop dance and its culture, Nuttin' But A Word takes you on a dramatic and abstract journey, twisting, matching, juxtaposing, and pulling vocabulary and music in ways unimaginable. Harris chooses to end this work in a traditional hip-hop celebration, in what Africanists may refer to as the "Bantaba." Decora is a rap artist and performance poet based in New York. He is best known for his unique brand of composition, which blends electronic and rap music with visual art. Since his debut album Bread and Oats in 2015, Decora has shared bills and stages with Justine Sky, DJ Khalid, Fat Joe, Meek Mill, Lauryn Hill, and T.I, to name a few. After performing across the U.S. and Canada, headlining festivals in the Pacific Northwest and New York, Decora received rave reviews by influential media outlets such as NPR, Highsnobiety, MTV, Chronogram, Upstater, AfroPunk, PopSugar, and Genius. In 2017 and 2018 Decora sold out Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, and has jam-packed over 90 concerts across the U.S. and Canada. Play | Malvolio: An Irreverent "Sequel" to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night -- Outdoors

It's wartime. A lowborn steward, Malvolio, has risen to the rank of general. He is determined to seek vengeance on a cast of characters who tormented him twenty years earlier. Malvolio encounters Volina, the daughter of Duke Orsino and Duchess Viola. Dismayed by the apathy of her fellow nobles, Volina tries to pass as male to join the war effort. When she falls in love with him, Malvolio is sure her ardent displays of unbridled passion and awkward love letters must be a trick. How do we get past each other's defenses? Can the right kind of love heal all wounds? Malvolio explores the difference between revenge and redemption. Written by Betty Shamieh.
