Jazz | Jazz and Samba Musical Conversations

Brazilian drummer Samuel Martinelli presents a Brazilian jazz concert featuring guest Hendrik Meurkens, “… one of the world’s leading exponents of the jazz harmonica.” (JazzTimes)  Brazilian music and jazz have a long history of music integration, especially after the Bossa Nova movement that took place in  Rio in the late 50s and spread throughout the world after the Carnegie Hall concert in 1962, where Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, and many others were presented to the world.  Jazz and Brazilian musicians always had respect and appreciation for one another, and this performance is part of a series of interviews and concerts that Mr. Martinelli is developing with the goal of keeping this beautiful cultural exchange between these two music cultures – Jazz, a truly American art, and Samba, a truly Brazilian art.

Also referred to as “citizen science,” community science projects galvanize the time, passion, and participation of concerned, curious people to get in the field to collect data or take other action that fuels research. You don’t need a degree or experience in a lab to participate – all you need is the desire to help out.

Discussion | Anonyms: A Guided Conversation on the Meanings Behind Names

Award-winning poet and playwright Inua Ellams (Barber Shop Chronicles, The Half-God of Rainfall) showcases the power of words. In parts of West Africa it is believed children grow to embody their names; that a child named Peace will grow up to radiate serenity. Other West Africans think this is rubbish. But how do we come to be named? What then do we inherit? Do names change us? Who cares? And why? Held before a live audience, Anonyms is a guided conversation on what we are called, and the stories they birth. The guests will generate questions for each other, and be given time to write and share their creative answers. Audience members are invited to participate; to come with the story and meaning behind their names. This event is part of 05Fest.

Concert | Singer-Guitarist Fuses African Sounds with Psychedelic Rock

Tuareg singer/songwriter and guitarist Mdou Moctar emerged from his small village in Niger with a distinct, self-taught playing style, infusing African influences with psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll. His viral success in West Africa’s cell phone-trading network—where villagers swap songs via Bluetooth and SIM cards—took him around the world and drew like-minded musicians into his orbit. He’s joined by Meg Baird, a masterful guitarist with a willowy voice, and Mary Lattimore, a musician and composer who wields effects pedals and synthesizers to modernize the harp for contemporary tastes. The two will perform works from their 2018 collaborative LP Ghost Forests. Rough Francis, a hard-edged Vermont rock band descended from the ‘70s proto-punk band Death, will open.

About the Artists Rickie Lee Jones' upcoming album, Pieces of Treasure, is a reunion with her lifelong friend, legendary producer Russ Titelman, co-producer of Jones' star-making debut and Pirates. Throughout her career, the Grammy-winning singer songwriter has interpreted an extraordinarily wide range of songs and has recorded celebrated jazz-leaning albums including Girl at Her Volcano and Pop Pop, but until now, she had never devoted an entire album to the American Songbook. "This album is as much about being human, the view of surviving--which means aging, and loving relentlessly--as it is about anything," says Jones. International singer, songwriter, and recording artist Thornetta Davis was awarded by the Detroit Blues Society "Living Lifetime Achievement Award" and awarded a star on the Canada South Blues Museum "Walk of Fame." In 2015 Thornetta was crowned "Detroit's Queen of the Blues" in a ceremony by the Detroit Blues Society. Thornetta has performed with and opened for Bob Seger, Kid Rock, and Blues Legends such as B.B. King, Ray Charles, Etta James, KoKo Taylor, Johnny Johnson, Bonnie Raitt, and more. Chris Pierce gained national prominence with We Can Always Come Back To This. His hit aired on 3 episodes of the NBC primetime series This Is Us, then went on to peak at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and #12 on iTunes Top 100. Dance Performance | Five of NYC's most iconic dance companies

See five of NYC's most iconic dance companies--Ballet Hispanico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem--together on one stage. PROGRAM: Ballet Hispanico - Linea Recta by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa From one of today's most sought-after choreographers comes a powerful and resonant work exploring an intriguing flamenco dance aspect: the conspicuous absence of physical partnering. While maintaining the integrity and hallmark passion of the genre, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa imagines an original and explosive movement language premised upon the theme of partnership and performed to flamenco guitar by Eric Vaarzon Morel. Linea Recta was commissioned in part by The Apollo Theater and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. American Ballet Theatre - Other Dances by Jerome Robbins Other Dances was created by Jerome Robbins specifically to showcase the legendary technique and artistry of Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who premiered the pas de deux in 1976, and it has since been performed by leading dancers in other major companies. Set to a waltz and four mazurkas by Frederic Chopin, Other Dances features a series of Polish folk-inspired choreography that pays homage to Chopin's romanticism and the purity of classical ballet technique. Dance Theatre of Harlem - Nyman String Quartet No. 2 by Robert Garland Set to Michael Nyman's String Quartet No. 2, Robert Garland continues his signature exploration of the intersection of cultures that is contemporary America. Complex and witty, this sophisticated work shows off the unique capacity of the company's artists to code-switch with abandon. World Premiere of Pas de O'Farill by Pedro Ruiz, a collaboration between Ballet Hispanico & New York City Ballet In tribute to the music of Latin Jazz sensation Arturo O'Farill, Pedro Ruiz takes on the classical ballet form and fuses it with the movement and essences of the Afro-Cuban diasporic legacy. The duet seeks to immerse the classical technique with the Latinx voice and expand the idea of what ballet is and can be. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Dancing Spirit by Ronald K. Brown Ronald K. Brown pays tribute to Judith Jamison's profound influence with a new work that echoes the title of Jamison's autobiography. Set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and War, Brown's evocative choreography uses movement from Cuba, Brazil and the United States to conjure dancing spirits who embody Jamison's elegance, vision, dignity and generosity. New York City Ballet - The Times Are Racing by Justin Peck Justin Peck's The Times Are Racing is a sneaker ballet that sees its dancers in streetwear, drawing inspiration from a variety of dance styles while matching Dan Deacon's electronic score with youthful impulse and vigor. The work is set to the last four tracks of Deacon's expansive 2012 album, America, marking Peck's second collaboration with fashion designer Humberto Leon of Opening Ceremony, and has lighting design by Peck's frequent collaborator Brandon Stirling Baker.

Dancing | Silent Disco: Disco-Driven Broadway

Strut your stuff under the stars on NYC’s largest outdoor dance floor with a 10-foot disco ball. Broadway lovers will be thrilled to spin to the music inspired by Here Lies Love, an immersive disco-driven dance show about Imelda Marcos and the People Power Revolution of the Philippines. With music by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, the work premieres on Broadway this summer. DJ CherishTheLuv, DJ Dr Samson, and twin sisters / DJs Amira & Kayla channel their takes on what the score of Here Lies Love means to them, and how their Filipino heritage drives their choice of tunes, selected especially for you.
