Lecture | The Hasidic Revival on the Eve of the Holocaust (online)

Few Jewish spiritual movements have proved as vital and enduring as Hasidism, which originated in the 18th-century Ukraine and spread into Poland and other lands over the next century. However, WWI and postwar pogroms proved devastating and deeply transformative. In Ukrainian territories, Hasidic courts were plundered and destroyed and Hasidic rebbes were exiled, murdered, or driven underground. In the newly established Second Polish Republic, in contrast, Hasidism experienced a revival. Here, the rebbes transformed themselves into educators bent on rescuing the Jewish youth from the effects of physical destruction and emerging secularist temptations. During the ensuing pedagogical revolution, which reconceived education for Hasidic young men and women alike, Hasidic yeshivas and Bais Yaakov schools began to overshadow Hasidic courts, and rebbes became known more for scholarship than miracle-working. On the eve of the Holocaust, Polish Hasidic society was more intellectually purposeful than it had been for many decades. Hasidic scholars were prioritized for rescue, while those left behind formed clandestine yeshiva bunkers in Nazi Ghettos and studied Torah down to the end. Speaker Glenn Dynner is the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Professor of Judaic Studies and Director of the Bennett Center at Fairfield University.

Opening Reception | Hayaki Nishigaki: A Monster of Our Own Making

At the brush of Hayaki Nishigaki (b. 1985), the iconic monster Godzilla becomes a contemporary motif explored across traditional painting techniques. From the aftermath of WWII to the environmental crises of today, the King of Monsters functions as a vessel for societal woes and national consciousness throughout Nishigaki’s work. While constant in form, this monster is ever evolving in meaning as he storms through different formats, historical themes, and artistic techniques. Rendered in gold-embellished nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and monochrome sansuiga (paintings of idealized landscapes), Nishigaki’s uses Godzilla to bring “to light what is internalized in society” with a touch of irony.

Book Discussion | My Men: America's First Female Serial Killer (online)

Welcome writer Victoria Kielland and translator Damion Searls to discuss My Men, Kielland’s novel based on the true story of America’s first female serial killer from the 19th Century, Belle Gunness. This dense, lyrical, and highly figurative novel charts Gunnes’s descent into madness as she struggles to attain the American dream. This is not a true crime narrative, but rather one that looks at violence as a form of agency during a time when women did not have material comforts without men.

Book Discussion | The Vegan: A Meaty Comedy Novel

Andrew Lipstein challenges our notions of virtue with a brilliant tale of guilt, greed, and how far we'll go to be good. Herschel Caine is a soon-to-be master of the universe. His hedge fund, built on the miracle of machine learning, is inches away from systematically extracting obscene profits from the market. His SoHo offices (shoes optional, therapy required) have been fine-tuned to reel in curious investors. But on the night of May 12, at his elegant Cobble Hill townhouse, he has something else on his mind--the dinner party he and his wife have devised to woo their new A-list neighbors. When the evening fizzles, Herschel indulges in a devilish prank that goes horrifically awry, plunging him into a tailspin of guilt and regret. As Herschel's tightly constructed world starts to unravel, he clings to the moral clarity he finds in the last place he'd expect: a sudden connection with a neighborhood dog.

It's wartime. A lowborn steward, Malvolio, has risen to the rank of general. He is determined to seek vengeance on a cast of characters who tormented him twenty years earlier. Malvolio encounters Volina, the daughter of Duke Orsino and Duchess Viola. Dismayed by the apathy of her fellow nobles, Volina tries to pass as male to join the war effort. When she falls in love with him, Malvolio is sure her ardent displays of unbridled passion and awkward love letters must be a trick. How do we get past each other's defenses?
