In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

Who are you as a photographer? Do your images blend in with the crowd or do they (and you) stand out? Mel DiGiacomo has had decades of experience shooting everything from sports to wedding, commercial to editorial, and his style is like no other. Even when shooting ubiquitous events like US Open Tennis, he doesn’t create the typical images; he sees and captures images that no one else does. Maybe that’s why he’s the only photographer in the Tennis Hall of Fame. In this presentation, Mel will discuss the evolution of finding your vision, and creating your style as a photographer no matter what your photographic specialty. This is not about f-stops and shutter speeds; this is about what is in your head and your heart and how to bring that to your photography. Prepare to be inspired!

With the ever-expanding popularity of digital cameras, landscape photography is becoming stale. Iconic locations are being overwhelmed with amateur and professional photographers eager to bring home their own version of the “trophy image”. The trouble is, unless a unicorn flies through the viewfinder, your shot will look almost exactly like everyone else’s. Luckily, technology is driving new frontiers in photography which open up different opportunities to create interesting imagery. We simply need to be willing to change our perspective. In this class, Miles Morgan will cover capturing new landscape perspectives utilizing different lenses, new camera technology, and drones. In addition, “creating light” in post processing will be discussed.

The short story "Sonny's Blues" was first published in 1957. It concerns a teacher in Harlem attempting to come to terms with the fact that his brother, a jazz musician, has been arrested for selling and using heroin.  James Baldwin (1924-1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. Some of Baldwin's essays are book-length, including The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro.
