The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. Book Club | Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

It is a play first staged in 1962. It examines the complexities of the marriage of a middle-aged couple, Martha and George. Late one evening, after a university faculty party, they receive an unwitting younger couple, Nick and Honey, as guests, and draw them into their bitter and frustrated relationship. The play won both the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1962–63 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. It is frequently revived on the modern stage. The film adaptation was released in 1966. Edward Albee (1928-2016) was an American playwright known for works such as The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), and A Delicate Balance (1966). Three of his plays won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and two of his other works won the Tony Award for Best Play.

Play | CANCELLED***Hamlet with the Title Character a Woman -- Outdoors***CANCELLED

***THIS PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED*** Director Karla Hendrick will stage the character as a modern young woman of intelligence and wisdom. Hamlet, clad in skirts, is rendered powerless when her uncle Claudius inserts himself into the line of succession and thrusts her aside. Determined and noble, she is someone who would take control through heart and with strength, but her conscience is a paralyzing force; moreover, she finds herself continuously isolated and betrayed by those closest to her and this impacts her ability to function. The play will be cut to a little over two hours to give the feeling of a world speeding out of control around her. The audience is challenged to consider whether the ascendancy of a female ruler could have wrought a better Denmark. This popular New York summer institution which presents Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot is now widely imitated around the US and around the world. To the company's knowledge and research, it is the first major New York outdoor stage company to offer a production with a female Hamlet. Unlike the well-known cross-gender castings of the masterpiece, this one is not a woman playing a man: the title character is a feminine Princess of Denmark, played by Jane Bradley. Thursdays through Saturdays, July 12-28, 2018.

Concert | Futurist Funk and African Rhythms

Based in Germany with roots in Mozambique, Ghana, Portugal, and Germany, producer Lee Bass and MC Gata Misteriosa -- known as Gato Preto -- have been lighting up the global bass scene with their Afro-Futurist, masked mystique since 2013. Using synths and effects processors side-by-side with live Djembe rhythms and dancers, all underlaid by supersonic bass and breakbeats, Gato Preto blends the favela funk of Rio, Township grooves from South Africa, and kuduro-techno hybrid of Angola into an irresistible mix. Having played at clubs and festivals around the world, including the African Futures Festival in South Africa, Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Festival, and South by Southwest this past March, Gato Preto (“Black Cat” in Portuguese) casts their spell over the Atrium in a rare NYC appearance.

Play | Sophocles's Antigone: Modern Re-Imagining of the Classic Greek Drama

Set in the city of Thebes in a dystopian future, the struggle for power, glory and the claim to the city shatters the bonds of brotherhood, leaving two men lifeless. The new king proclaims one brother a hero and the other a usurper, leaving his limp body lying in the street as an example to those who dare act against the state. The citizens of the city avert their eyes due to fear, turning instead to their new leader who vows to restore order to the war torn city. But when the sister of the slain young brothers protests the edict, she breaks faith with everything she has ever known in order to set things right at any cost. Calling on the cultural landscape of African-American traditions, while adhering to the Greek tragic form; this fresh reimagining of the classic story will captivate, stun and inspire audiences from all backgrounds. The Classical Theatre of Harlem's production is inspired by the Paul Roche adaptation which accomplishes a fidelity to the original while giving CTH the flexibility to showcase ancient ideas that have taken center stage in the current climate: order, law, justice and marginalized voices confronting power and patriarchy.
