Book Club | Paul Bowles' The Sheltering Sky

In this classic work of psychological terror, Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend an alien culture and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them. The story of three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after World War II, the novel is merciless and heartbreaking in its compassion. It etches the limits of human reason and intelligence-perhaps even the limits of human life-when they touch the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the desert. Paul Bowles (1910-1999) was an American expatriate composer, author, and translator. He studied music with Aaron Copland. He achieved critical and popular success with his first novel The Sheltering Sky (1949), set in what was known as French North Africa, which he had visited in 1931.

Opera | New York Opera Forum: Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti

New York Opera Forum presents a concert version of Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). Lucia di Lammermoor is a dramma tragico (tragic opera) in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The Italian-language libretto by Salvadore Cammarano loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The story concerns the emotionally fragile Lucy Ashton who is caught in a feud between her own family and that of the Ravenswoods. The setting is the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland in the 17th century. Gaetano Donizetti was a leading composer of the "bel canto" (English: beautiful singing) opera style during the first half of the nineteenth century. Donizetti's close association with the bel canto style was an influence on other composers such as Giuseppe Verdi.

Opening Reception | Last Days in a Lovely Place: New Photographic Works

Last Days in a Lovely Place provides a conceptual and formal break from the Theodore Darst’s previous video projects. Darst abandons the highly rendered and processed landscape of professional video editing software in favor of less robust, casual mark making tools, and traditional photographic processes–counterpointing this shift is his attention to the detailed and labor intensive processes of working and reworking each image and frame. Theodore Darst (b. 1986) is an artist living and working in Manhattan. He recently staged a solo exhibition at Magenta Plains, NYC and a collaborative show with Collin Leitch at Kings Leap, Brooklyn. Upcoming exhibitions include a project with the poet Rob Fitterman at Broken Dimanche Press in Berlin and group exhibitions at Franklin Street Works in Stamford, CT and Pilot Projects in Philadelphia.

Play | CANCELLED***Hamlet with the Title Character a Woman -- Outdoors***CANCELLED

***THIS PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED*** Director Karla Hendrick will stage the character as a modern young woman of intelligence and wisdom. Hamlet, clad in skirts, is rendered powerless when her uncle Claudius inserts himself into the line of succession and thrusts her aside. Determined and noble, she is someone who would take control through heart and with strength, but her conscience is a paralyzing force; moreover, she finds herself continuously isolated and betrayed by those closest to her and this impacts her ability to function. The play will be cut to a little over two hours to give the feeling of a world speeding out of control around her. The audience is challenged to consider whether the ascendancy of a female ruler could have wrought a better Denmark. This popular New York summer institution which presents Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot is now widely imitated around the US and around the world. To the company's knowledge and research, it is the first major New York outdoor stage company to offer a production with a female Hamlet. Unlike the well-known cross-gender castings of the masterpiece, this one is not a woman playing a man: the title character is a feminine Princess of Denmark, played by Jane Bradley. Thursdays through Saturdays, July 12-28, 2018.

Play | Sophocles's Antigone: Modern Re-Imagining of the Classic Greek Drama

Set in the city of Thebes in a dystopian future, the struggle for power, glory and the claim to the city shatters the bonds of brotherhood, leaving two men lifeless. The new king proclaims one brother a hero and the other a usurper, leaving his limp body lying in the street as an example to those who dare act against the state. The citizens of the city avert their eyes due to fear, turning instead to their new leader who vows to restore order to the war torn city. But when the sister of the slain young brothers protests the edict, she breaks faith with everything she has ever known in order to set things right at any cost. Calling on the cultural landscape of African-American traditions, while adhering to the Greek tragic form; this fresh reimagining of the classic story will captivate, stun and inspire audiences from all backgrounds. The Classical Theatre of Harlem's production is inspired by the Paul Roche adaptation which accomplishes a fidelity to the original while giving CTH the flexibility to showcase ancient ideas that have taken center stage in the current climate: order, law, justice and marginalized voices confronting power and patriarchy.
