Film | Japanese Film: Toshifumi Matsushita's The Gift of Pachamama (2008)

A spiritual docudrama about a 13-year-old Quechua boy in Bolivia on his first salt caravan, “The Salt Trail,” a traditional journey that his family has been undertaking for countless generations. What follows is the boy’s (and viewer’s) discovery about traditional cultures in highland Bolivia. Variety says that “Pachamama” is a “delightful celebration” of a “vanishing way of life.” Named after the Quechua earth goddess, “Pachamama” [Earth Mother] -- in the hands of director Matsushita -- emerges as a “charmingly loose road odyssey” utilizing non-professional actors in an “unpretentious and warm” manner. 102 min. Professor Odi Gonzales Jiminez, Language Lecturer at the Center for Latin American & Carribean Studies, King Juan Carlos I Spain Center, will introduce the film. The director Toshi Matsushita will give a talk at the conclusion of the screening.
