Discussion | The Mysterious Past

With moderator Triss Stein and panelists Frankie Y. Bailey, James Benn, Joanne Dobson and Laura Joh Rowland of Mystery Writers of America -- New York Chapter. As the saying goes, "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." Exploring that country through the lens of crime has been one of the most popular trends in mystery writing. What is the appeal for both readers and writers? Is crime solving easier, or harder, when there was less technology? How do the experts do their research, and more important, how do they make that foreign country come alive again for the reader? The panelists write about the past from World War 11 to feudal Japan to an up-to-the minute setting where the past, and past crimes, never really die.
