Joseph LePique will explain the agency’s important role in the construction and restoration of the city-owned built environment. Jeremy Woodoff will then present a case study of a recent DDC initiative to persuade the Carnegie libraries to re-open their historic interior skylights, which add beautiful natural light to these graceful structures. Mr. Woodoff will explain the DDC’s draft Historic Structures Report on the Park Slope branch, whose skylight has been restored and re-opened as a remarkable example for other Brooklyn branches to follow.

Cumbia music and dance originated in Colombia and is now the hottest dance in Latin America. Cumbia music is sometimes called the mother of all Latin music, including salsa and samba. You’ll see elements of both swing and salsa in this upbeat social dance and you can dance it with or without a partner. Join renowned Colombian dancer/choreographer Daniel Fetecua and learn the fun and easy moves of Cumbia, and then continue to explore other rich Colombian dances such as bullerengue, puya, fandango, and mapalé. Author Reading | Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond discusses his book The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies?

In the book, his first in more than five years, Diamond compares life in modern, industrialized societies with traditional ways of life and argues that traditional societies have much to teach us about conflict resolution, care of elders and children, risk management, multilingualism, and nutrition. With a unique blend of anthropology, sociology, and evolutionary biology, Diamond depicts a way of life that is startlingly different from the way we live today. Focusing on how we can improve contemporary society by learning lessons from the past, Diamond’s message is both urgent and persuasive: With some thought and effort, we can have the best of both worlds.
