Lecture | The Biomedicalization of Addiction: Anthropology of the Clinic

With Helena Hansen, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Psychiatry, Addiction treatment advocates have been calling for recognition and treatment of addiction as a biological illness. And they have been successful in introducing addiction pharmaceuticals into primary care clinics, which in some cases has required changes in Federal law. This talk presents a long term, multi-method study of the cultural shift toward the use of addiction pharmaceuticals in primary care, in particular the introduction of opioid maintenance drugs into general clinics. It highlights the political economic forces acting on clinical practice, and the imagery of race and class underlying them.

Forum | Cabinet on Trial: A Magazine of No Qualities?

For more than a decade, Cabinet has published essays and artist projects that have ranged far and wide in topic and tone. To some, this breadth of interests suggests an ethically grounded culture of curiosity about the world. For others, this eclecticism is merely the symptom of an undisciplined dilettantism that fails to engage the crucial issues of today. It is time for a reckoning! In connection with the launch of Cabinet’s new anthology, those responsible for the publication will be called to the dock to answer for their activities. Inspired by Dada mock trials, this event brings together a formidable cast of litigators and judges in a format mixing serious debate with courtroom drama.

Discussion | Young Feminist Activism Today

A panel with Lena Chen, Jessica Danforth, Sydnie Mosley, Dior Vargas, and Julie Zeilinger. As long as there has been feminism, there have been young feminists. On the street, on college campuses, and online, young people have worked to break down oppressive systems and nourish creative communities that honor the worth and dignity of all involved. Young feminists continue to labor on a daily basis to change policies and perceptions around reproductive justice, policing and the prison system, popular culture, gender-based harassment and violence, sexuality education, and much more. This panel continues a decades-long tradition of examining the forefront of young feminist activism with this group of dedicated activists under 30. Lena Chen is a reluctant sexpert, writer, feminist activist and queer advocate; Jessica Danforth is a self-described “multiracial Indigenous hip-hop feminist reproductive justice freedom fighter”; Sydnie Mosely is a dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher; Dior Vargas is an organizer for an Occupy Affinity Group, Fem Force, a board member at the Third Wave Foundation, and a writer; and Julie Zeilinger is an author and founder of The FBomb.org.
