Lecture | Rice: The Immigrant Grain

How and why did rice, primarily long grain white rice, arrive in the British colonies and become big business? Rice origins are Asian and West African, and it is through the movement of Asian and West African populations, whether voluntary or compulsory, that rice eventually became an established staple in US agriculture. US rice consumption continues to increase as immigrants arrive from different rice cultures. From hoppin’john to rice cakes to food truck pilaf to sushi, rice is everywhere, although you may not have noticed. Renee Marton, a writer in residence in the Library's Allen Room, was a restaurant chef for many years and now teaches in culinary schools in NYC. She has written about food history for academic journals and food encyclopedias. Today’s talk is taken from her new book, Rice: a Global History, due in 2013, published by Reaktion Books, UK.

Opening Reception | Dyed Leather Artworks by Winfred Rembert

WINFRED REMBERT was born in 1945 and grew up in the segregation and poverty of rural Georgia where cotton and peanut farming were the toil of living. After working in the fields since early childhood, being arrested during a civil rights demonstration, surviving a near-lynching and serving seven years in prison, Rembert married his beloved Patsy and moved to Connecticut in 1975 where they raised eight children. First learning to tool leather from watching a fellow inmate in prison, Rembert began to make his colorful dyed leather artworks at the age of 52 to tell the stories from his youth of cotton pickers and peanut planters, church singing and juke joint dancing, cafes and pool halls, prison and chain gangs.
