Dance Performance | Poor Dog Group presents The Murder Ballad

With a murky mix of desire, jealousy and emancipatory yearning, Poor Dog Group's latest movement-based work gives forceful physical life to Jelly Roll Morton's legendary 1938 recording. Originally performed in the brothels of New Orleans’ steamy Storyville district, Morton's song revels in the nastiness of its heroine’s voice, whose feral physical energy lays claim to the violent impulses of a woman betrayed. The Murder Ballad delves into the myth of female madness and racialized representations of sexuality. Performed by Jessica Emmanuel & Jesse Saler.

City Walk | Midtown Manhattan Tour

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Opening Reception | Drawings & Sculpture by Jay Kelly

Jay Kelly creates in two distinct media: works on vellum and sculptures. He uses graphite or graphite and pastel for the drawings and oil for the paintings. All of the works are abstract, concentrated, soft, and beguiling. The sculptures are metal or painted wood and stand, generally vertically-oriented, under one foot high. Their satisfaction is purely formal though not at all sternly minimal. Several pieces suggest a lightness and playfulness that pleasantly compliments their graceful construction.

Opening Reception | Embracing Arms, New Strappo Monotypes by Sarah Hauser

Are we in modern times? The world we live in has become increasingly surreal and out of proportion, at times resembling a science fiction or horror movie from the 50s or 60s. Entertainment is obsessed with guns and women. Fundamental religious beliefs are in continuous conflict with each other and themselves. Children are blasted with these obsessions from birth. I am trying to capture these enigmas of modernity by juxtaposing women in classical poses arranged in iconic formats, as well as juxtaposing babies and weapons. These works are strappo monotypes, a process developed and taught to Sarah by artist Harold Garde. Strappo prints are created by painting with acrylics on glass. Because the first brushstrokes you put on the glass will end up being the top surface of the print, it is quite a unique way of developing an image. When the image is completed, it is peeled off the glass and transferred, using gesso to adhere it to paper, canvas or panels. The process lends itself to experimentation with layers of colors and patterns. There is also a great deal of flexibility in creating the image, as one can always scrape back into the image, creating textures or cutting whole sections away.

Theater | The Kingdom, a Non-Devotional Theater Production

A non-devotional theater production encountering a pillar of Western culture: Judeo-Christian mythology. A fragmented narrative reverberates with echoes of Genesis, destruction of the Temple, and a messianic figure. The tradition's cycles of appearance / negation explore the crisis of form: the impossibility of containing what is infinite within word, image, or body. More than a theological problem, this a universal query. Almost entirely without spoken text, a production of actions, design elements, and presence.

Performance | Comedy: Yes, Yes, Yes… And

Yes, Yes, Yes… And! is a scandalous night of down-right-sexy improv. Some of the most incorrigible performers team up to turn down the lights, slip into something a little more comfortable, and spend the good part of an hour tickling your funny boners. Beware of partial nudity, strong sexual themes, and the possibility to be dragged on stage for a not-so-wholesome game of Truth or Dare. This show is NOT for the faint-of-heart.
