Discussion | Narrating Diversity: Muslim Writers in Contemporary America

Discussions, April 13, 2019, 04/13/2019, Narrating Diversity: Muslim Writers in Contemporary America

Saturday, April 13, 2019, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

It is commonly said that we fear what we don’t understand. Living up to our American ideals requires us to understand our neighbors, our colleagues, and our friends despite our diverse backgrounds. Yet in recent years, Muslims in America have rarely been portrayed as nuanced and complex human beings, and most Americans say they don’t know a Muslim.

Muslims for American Progress, a project of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, aims to change this narrative. Through human stories and hard facts, MAP quantifies Muslim contributions in Michigan and New York City.

In this special library event, you’ll be taking a special look at the important contributions of Muslims writers to American society, how they narrate diversity, and what their work can teach us more broadly about social, cultural and political life.

Moustafa Bayoumi is an Author, Journalist, and Professor of English at CUNY, Brooklyn College and author of This Muslim American Life: Dispatches from the War of Terror and How Does it Feel to be a Problem? Being Young and Arab in America.

Hamdan Azhar is a journalist, Data Scientist, and Co-Founder of the Muslim Writers Collective.

Aizzah Fatima is a Writer, Playwright, and Actress.

Rowaida Abdelaziz is a journalist and social media editor at HuffPost, where she focuses on reporting and distributing news about US Muslim life and international affairs. She has has written numerous stories on the refugee crises in Syria, Yemen and other parts of the Arab world.

This event will be moderated by Elisabeth Becker a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Religion & Its Publics project at UVA and the Institute for the Advanced Study of Culture, as well as a non-residential fellow with the Muslim Diaspora Initiative at the New America Foundation, a non-residential fellow with the Humility and Conviction in Public Life project at the University of Connecticut and the Principal Investigator of the MAP-NYC project with the Institute for Social Policy & Understanding, measuring the impact of Muslims on New York City.
