Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Quintet op 39 for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass (1924)

About the Program
Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola and harp is one of his finest compositions and the first major work written for this combination of the instruments. It was written as a part of Six sonatas for various instruments. The composer was only able to complete three sonatas of the cycle due to his death in 1918. The work premiered in Boston, at Jordan Hall in the New England Conservatory, on November 7, 1916. The performers were members of a wind ensemble called the Longy Club, which had been founded by the principal oboist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, George Longy.

Sergey Prokofiev (1891–1953) left Russia in the wake of the 1917 October Revolution, establishing himself in the West with concert tours around the United States and Europe. He lived briefly in New York and Germany, then settled in Paris in 1923. In that epicenter of the musical avant-garde, Prokofiev made a splash with his colorful and incisive scores, especially his ballets. Quintet op 39 for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass is related to his ballet Trapèze.
