Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Demonstrating how this policy has been implemented in Ukraine and Georgia, Grigas’ new book provides cutting-edge analysis of the nature of Vladimir Putin's foreign policy and compatriot protection to warn that Moldova, Kazakhstan, the Baltic States, and others are also at risk.

Opening Reception | Point of View: Six Photographers

Six gallery artists bring six very different landscapes, without traveling anywhere at all. The photographers work in the context of their very different styles to focus on a physical way of looking (through, narrowly, behind, closely, down) rather than on an abstract idea. Their shows all transform our accessible, mundane world into a personal way of seeing. The resulting work is pretty exciting.

Discussion | Dystopian Urbanisms

By many measures, the global future does not look bright. Climate change is largely unaddressed, wealth inequality is skyrocketing, and violent conflict has created both forced migration and new forms of xenophobia. While most of these issues involve the (in)actions of nation-states, they will play out at the level of the city. Given the many new demands on shelter, access to food and water, and social integration, the challenges to maintaining democratic cities in the 21st century are enormous. This panel will consider those challenges and offer insight into several global examples of marginalized populations coping with 21st century urban problems. In particular, the panelists will analyze how new forms of exclusion are occurring in international cities in response to environmental factors such as climate vulnerability, land shortages, and water availability. Finally, they will reflect on whether a dystopian vision of 21st century urban life is justified, what forms it may take, and how it can potentially be mitigated. Panelists: Liza Weinstein, Associate Professor, Northeastern University, Sociology Gokce Gunel, Columbia University, Faculty Fellow, Anthropology Carlos Forment, Associate Professor and Director of Latin American Studies, New School for Social Research Moderator: Max Holleran, New York University, Sociology

Author Reading | Twenty Years of Rolling the R’s and The White Boy Shuffle

The year was 1996. Two novelists of color publish stunning and provocative coming-of-age debuts. Through fiercely earnest characters navigating a landscape of burning dreams and neglect in a small 1970s Hawaiian community, R. Zamora Linmark’s Rolling the R’s threw new light on queer identity and the trauma of assimilation—and is now available in a new, updated edition from Kaya Press. Paul Beatty’s brilliant, satirical The White Boy Shuffle introduced us to an unforgettable protagonist — a young African American surfer in Los Angeles who reluctantly becomes a messiah for his community. Twenty years after the publication of their first novels, the two authors join each other in reflection, celebration, and conversation.

Author Reading | Jarett Kobek reads from his book I Hate the Internet

I Hate the Internet is set in San Francisco in 2013. Its subtitle is: ‘A Useful Novel Against Men, Money, and the Filth of Instagram’. It stars Beyonce, Jack Kirby, Steve Jobs, Ayn Rand, Black Twitter and characters with varying degrees of eumelanin in the basalr strata of their epidermises. It’s a howl of a novel - funny, vicious, expurgative - about being useless in a new world that despises the pointless and unprofitable.

Screening | Trisha Brown and the Staging of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo

Claudio Monteverdi’s 1607 L’Orfeo was a milestone in the history of opera. In 1998, almost 400 years later, postmodernist choreographer Trisha Brown directed a new production at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels that melded singers and dancers in a vision both formally abstract and intensely moving. In this documentary about her staging of the opera, Diane Madden, the Trisha Brown Dance Company’s associate artistic director, soars across the stage in front of a disc of blazing color, while Stacy Matthew Spence is shown helping the singers move with the dignity and grace he embodies in his own dancing. Department of Dance Co-Chair Lynn Garafola leads them in a conversation, along with Susan Boynton, professor of historical musicology at Columbia University.

A native of Asbury Park, this “New Jersey visionary” (Star Ledger) cites Bob Dylan as his earliest influence, and there is a distinct thread of lyrical Americana that runs through his songs.

Screening | Scenes through the Cinema Lens: Ladies Sing the Blues

The first great blues artist to appear on film was Bessie Smith. In an amazing short film from 1929, St. Louis Blues, she plays a rejected, brutalized woman who has lost her man. In one scene, she leans on a bar at a nightclub and sings the blues over a mug of beer. Although the film attempts to portray her as a “primitive” woman who expresses herself without thinking about her music, she turned her performance into a tour de force. When she sings “St. Louis Blues,” she exhibits all of her talents as an artist. Many female singers have followed her in bringing a unique artistry to the performance of the blues. They will look at great blues singing by Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Anita O’Day and a few surprises.
