Symposium | Hearing Signs, Seeing Voices: The Voice at the Limits

From the lure of Circe and Echo to the disembodied modern oracle of Siri, the transient mystique of the voice lends itself to the ineffable. Both of and beyond the body, the voice is a unique instrument for illustrating abstract concepts, from the political vox populi to the philosophical voice of conscience. When lifted to such heights, however, the diffusion of the metaphor leaves the more mundane, throat-bound physical voice behind. Symbolic trumps sonic—the ideal outweighs the physical. Through a range of performances and presentations, this symposium will seek to bring the voice back down to earth, as a corporeal phenomenon that can be pushed to its limits through the desire to explore different modes of expression, identity and power. This one-day event offers an array of techniques, methods and practices that explore various ways in which the voice can flex its expressive muscles. Topics include transgender voice training, composition with extended vocal techniques, sexuality and voice, “extreme” voice coaching, and the virtuosity of beat-boxing. Guest presenters include renowned composer/performers Joan LaBarbara and Gelsey Bell, countertenor Gòn Halevy, Beatbox House, speech pathologist Christie Block, extreme vocal coach Melissa Cross, and David Thorpe, director of the documentary Do I Sound Gay? Morning and afternoon refreshments will be served.

Conference | Democracy and Expertise

The idea of this conference is to discuss the tension between democracy and expertise, which Robert C. Post will address in his keynote speech. We are living in a globalizing world in which knowledge, science, and technology are constantly changing at a high speed, and in which the information about this knowledge is diffused worldwide at an equally high speed. Societies need this knowledge and rely on expertise in order to flourish and be able to solve vexing problems such as the international financial crisis, the Eurozone crisis, and climate change. Thus, competent democratic governance is not possible without the knowledge of experts. Takes place March 31-April 1.

Lecture | The Dulles Plan for Russia: Conspiracy Theories and Post-Soviet Culture

A talk with Alexander Panchenko, leading research fellow at the Institute of Russian Literature, Russian Academy of Sciences; Professor of Anthropology at the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University; and director of the Center for Anthropology of Religion, European University at St. Petersburg. Conspiracy theories are a powerful explanatory model, or way of thinking, that influences many cultural forms and social processes throughout the contemporary world. Conspiracy theories include a number of principal ideas and concepts that make them adaptable to broad variety of discourses and forms of collective imagination. Proceeding from the necessity to explain and localize evil as a social and moral category, conspiracy theories produce ethical models that oppose ‘us’ to ‘them’, ‘victims’ to ‘enemies’, ‘heroes’ to ‘anti-heroes’.

Discussion | Shakespeare vs. Mozart: A Library Debate

For four hundred years, western culture has continuously looked to Shakespeare to share the truth of the human condition. On the other hand, the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart miraculously captures the sublime and expresses the inexpressible. As the Library presents concurrent exhibitions celebrating the work of Shakespeare and of Mozart, the question must be answered - who is the greatest genius? In one corner: Shakespeare experts from The Shakespeare Society and the New Yorker magazine. In the other corner: Mozart defenders from the Mostly Mozart Festival and the New York University. Each side will battle with competing evidence, utilizing live performances and historic materials from The Library’s archives. Q2 Music’s Brothers Balliett moderate this epic clash of titans. One night only. Who will win?
