Symposium | The Search for Genetic Origins of Human Behavior: Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications

The search for genes that influence human behavior raises important ethical, legal, and social issues. How will our attitudes change if we learn that people’s behavior is due, at least in part, to genes? Should genetic tests that predict tendencies to behave in certain ways be developed, and if so, how should they be used? If genetic contributions to gender identity are found, will that alter how we view sexuality and gender? What impact will identification of genes that contribute to criminal behavior, including violence, have on our views about personal responsibility? Should the legal system alter its approach to culpability for criminal actions and punishment? Light refreshments will be served.

Lecture | Feminism and the Abomination of Violence

Feminism rightly sees one of its most important tasks as the exposure of, and struggle against, violence toward women. In the twenty-first century this violence shows no sign of decreasing. In this lecture, Jacqueline Rose argues that because the discourse on violence has tended to be appropriated by radical feminist thinking – violence is not only, but also exclusively, what men do to women – the question of violence, as part of psychic reality, has become something that feminism repudiates.

Slide Lecture | Who Are the Litvaks? History, Lore and Cultural Trends

A major but little-understood tribe of East European Jews, the Litvaks hail from a territory of northeastern Europe that today includes Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, parts of northeast Poland, eastern Ukraine and some snippets of westernmost Russia. Known for their unique dialect of Yiddish and (Ashkenazic) Hebrew, as well as for their alleged stubbornness, love of learning, lack of patience with the presumably unsubstantial, and at times humorlessness and eccentric streak, the Litvak ethos lurks in many of today’s Jewish people internationally. in this talk, Prof. Dovid Katz will offer a survey of Litvak history, lore and cultural trends (and wars) from the fourteenth century ranging to predictions about the later twenty-first century. Questions and comments will be most welcome. The speaker promises to devote some (sympathetic) time to non-Litvaks, especially Galitsyáner, too.
