Talk | Sexual Ethics: New Perspectives


A prominent theology professor and author, Margaret Farley stirred controversy within the Catholic Church for her 2012 book Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics. Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith warned the faithful of the “risks of grave harm” from Farley’s book. In this lecture, Farley will approach issues of gender, sexuality, and ethics from historical vantage points, and explore contemporary insights and questions. She will offer a basis for “development” in philosophical, scientific, and religious understandings of sexual ethics, applicable in secular, cultural, and religious traditions.

Peter Berman is a bassist and improvisor from New York City. His compositions consist of text, graphic scores, and systematic notation in the visual and sonic style of Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko compressed to neutron degeneracy. Berman is the co-founder of the educational organization The New York Local Syndicate of Bass n' Steaks, co-leader of the band Tiny Penderecki, and is grandstudent of Charlie Haden, Wadada Leo Smith, and Mark Dresser.
