Workshop | NPR-Featured Photographer Shares Insights into the Art of Documentary Photography

In this presentation, documentary photographer Olivia Bowdoin shares the relationship-first approach ... more >> she has developed for creating self-initiated projects without always having institutional backing or editorial assignments. Drawing inspiration from journalism, sociology, and the anthropological practice of participant observation, Olivia will explore how slowing down, building genuine relationships, and spending time observing before photographing can lead to stronger visual storytelling and deeper community trust. She'll discuss practical ways to identify story ideas, connect with people through both traditional and unexpected avenues, including social media, and navigate the challenges of documenting communities with genuine thoughtfulness and curiosity. Olivia will share actionable strategies for photographers and filmmakers looking to create meaningful documentary work, whether they're just beginning a personal project or hoping to build a body of work that attracts editorial opportunities. While the examples come from documentary photography, the principles of relationship building, access, and ethical storytelling apply equally to documentary filmmaking and other forms of visual journalism.
