This event is an afternoon of live, free-form creative writing. No formal writing experience is required - just enthusiasm and curiosity to see where writing takes you. Participants are provided with suggested prompts at the start of the session, approximately 30 minutes to free write, and the remainder of the hour to share and listen to others' pieces. This is a relaxed forum to experiment with and strengthen your writing. There is the option, but not the requirement, to share your work in each session. Workshop | An Evening of Rowing in New York Harbor
At this rowing session, after a brief orientation, participants will be assigned to a crew with an experienced coxswain to steer the boat and a mixture of experienced and new rowers. The boats, Whitehall gigs, are stable, traditional working boats for four rowers and a coxswain. No experience is necessary and rowers of all ability levels are welcome! The rowing sessions last several hours and are designed to be excursions: groups row against the tide to a destination, take a break onshore or in a protected cove, then return home with the tide. Opening Reception | Brad Holland: Making It Personal -- Solo Exhibition from Museum of American Illustration-Featured Artist
An exhibition of work by the late artist and illustrator. A reconsideration of one of the most influential illustrators of the twentieth century through a diverse collection. A long-underrecognized force within the art form, he produced work ranging from painting and drawing to posters, album covers, book jackets, photography, and other two-dimensional works. The exhibition will include a wide variety of these, as well as a recreation of his table easel, original artist’s palettes piled high with paint, and other personal ephemera.

Installation | Dogs: Solo Exhibition of Canine Sculptures (Opening Celebration in the Park)
A drop-in event with opening remarks and a chance to explore the artist's installation for the first time. For her first public exhibition in New York City, Camille Henrot brings 15 sculptures of dogs. Building on an existing series, Henrot's installation includes new sculptures in a variety of materials suited to the outdoors, including bronze, stone, steel, and concrete. Each work is born out of an accumulation of visual references, including Saul Steinberg drawings, Tex Avery cartoons, ancient Egyptian sculpture, dog show competitions, and more.

Opening Reception | The Chemical Alphabet: Solo Exhibition from MoMA-Featured Artist
In these paintings, Rita Ackermann takes on a new source of vocabulary: letters from a Semitic alphabet. The structure of each symbol serves as an anchor for each composition. The configuration of the letter, painted in acrylic green chalkboard paint on a canvas primed by multiple silkscreen prints, allows the surface to be built through Ackermann’s chalkboard method: layers of pastel and chalk drawings are erased, washed away, and redrawn until multiple states of the painting coexist on the canvas. Here, the picture advances through accumulation and erasure. At the center of this constructive destruction, the letter remains, its meaning shifting with the evolving image around it.

Book Discussion | French & History Scholar Discusses Writing Colonial History
Emmanuelle Saada, in conversation with Youssef Ben Ismail, John Tachiang Ma, and Gregory Mann, moderated by Madeleine Dobie. Colonial legacies dominate many contemporary political debates around the world. How do historians contribute to these debates and to the understanding of colonial situations, past and present? Starting with the observation that modern history is, in part, a product of colonial projects, Emmanuelle Saada's new book, Histoires et colonisations: Des recits de la conquete aux heritages post-coloniaux revisits major historiographical debates and controversies of the past two hundred years by testing them against a wide range of colonial situations, spanning five continents and five centuries. She explores how historians have forged their concept of colonization from very diverse historical situations, including the U.S., Israel, and Ireland. Her book shows how engagement with colonial contexts has transformed historians' methods and writing practices. Please review the venue's access requirements.

David Conrad-Pérez shares his book detailing the story of what happened when a tragic fire in Greenwich Village threw Adolph Ochs, the ambitious new publisher of the New York Times, and Rose Schneiderman, a defiant young labor organizer, against each other in a momentous conflict. Following the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire―the worst disaster New York City had ever experienced up to that point―a significant feud emerged between New York’s wealthy elite and labor rights’ activists over who should organize the city's response: a nascent charity sector led by the city's wealthiest bankers or the reform-focused unions of Lower Manhattan.
