Talk | Artist Talk: Linguitics and Word Craft

Artist Aaron Cobbet is a beacon of creativity and resilience, his quilts and obelisks are testaments personal and collective histories. His installation envelops with a comforting embrace, a testament to Cobbett's journey through the AIDS crisis. Quilting was more than a creative outlet; but a form of therapy. Cobbett's incorporation of word quilts and visual puns captivates. He plays a game of linguistic and wordc craft, the meaning of words shift upon verbalization. Alongside his quilts, Cobbett's obelisks stand tall and proud, their monolithic forms symbolizing both power and vulnerability.

Workshop | Creative Writing with an R&B Focus

“Pass the P’s” (like we use to say) Poetry, Prose, & Performance in Celebration of 1960’s and 1970’s Sweet Soul Music “Pass the P’s” (like we use to say) – A Celebration of 1960’s and 1970’s Sweet Soul in Poetry, Prose, and Performance, is a unique, improv-styled, creative writing workshop conceived and designed by Award-Winning artist and author, Nikki Williams. We’ll be writing, sharing, and performing our own Soul Narratives – with a little finger-popping along the way! And as in the Black Tradition of Called-and-Response, Fred Wesley and the J.B.’s requested: “Pass the Peas like we use to say, Pass the Peas like we use to say, Pass the Peas like we use to say,“ we back shout, like James Brown did in funky reply: “Pass ‘em then!”

Performance | The Threshing Zone: Performance Art

Felix Bernstein's The Threshing Zone is a manic lecture on the erogenous body. How to develop a new theory of desire from its remainders and sore spots—what’s been written off as infantile or degenerate? Bernstein draws on a glut of visual sources to diagram what psychoanalysis could never metabolize, from medieval anatomy books and medical archives to astrological charts and visceral animations. The fluidity of the slideshow format confers its own propulsive logic, linking the evidence—whether found or fabricated—through loose affinities of shape and form: rims become cracks or vanishing points that give way to the cavities of fossilized shells, then liquefy into TikToks of oozing slime. The Threshing Zone crosses the empirical and the outlandish to map these wayward drives, forging new models of identity formation written on the flesh.

Concert | George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic: Funk Legends in the Park

Funk pioneer George Clinton brings the collective Parliament Funkadelic to the park. Clinton revolutionized R&B during the '70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from such legends as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. Parliament Funkadelic captured more than 40 R&B hit singles in the '70s including three number ones and three platinum albums. The early '90s saw the rise of funk-inspired rap (courtesy of Digital Underground, Dr. Dre, and Warren G) and funk rock (Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers) that re-established the status of Clinton & Co. as one of the most important forces in the recent history of Black music. A night to remember!

Concert | Punk and Marimba Music in a Park

A legendary force born out of the Los Angeles punk rock scene, Fishbone brings unparalleled energy. The electrifying opener, Son Rompe Pera, infuses traditional marimba music with garage-punk fervor. About the Performers Fishbone signed to Columbia Records in 1984 and has released 4 albums and 3 eps and toured the world headlining shows and festivals. After years of touring and rotating members, Fishbone currently includes original members Angelo Moore (vocals/Saxophone), Chris Dowd (Keys/Vocals), and Dirty Walt (Trumpet/Vocals), rounding it out with drummers, Hassan Hurd, Aryon Davis, and Mark Phillips. Born and raised in Naucalpan, the deep outskirts of Mexico City, the Gama brothers and their band Son Rompe Pera have thrashed through all preconceived notions of what a marimba-centered band is, and have rendered the instrument inseparable from their punk ethos. Their shows have become home to the now-infamous marimba mosh pit across the globe, joining intergenerational audiences in moments of essential release and community around their hard-hitting, forward-thinking, unrelenting punk-infused cumbias. With two critically-acclaimed records under their belt, and hundreds of shows on some of the world’s most prestigious stages to a rapidly growing audience, the band consistently proves their boundlessness as far as where they can take the genre, standing vehemently by the fact that traditions are meant to be both honored, broken, and built again.
