Concert | An Afro-Venezuelan Tradition of San Juan: Music and Dance

A unique celebration of the Afro-Venezuelan tradition of San Juan through a "walking procession": the collaborative ritual of dancing and singing to the beat of drums. San Juan was originally a slave celebration in the cocoa and coffee plantations in the Caribbean coasts of Venezuela, later adopted and syncretized by the Catholic church. Though it has been celebrated in Venezuela for hundreds of years and ostensibly celebrates the summer solstice and the birth of Saint John the Baptist, modern participation in San Juan often acts as a statement of self and pride in one's nationality and race. This recentering of San Juan in New York City is hosted by the Brooklyn musical collective Tambor y Ca?a with special guests San Juan USA. As the conductor and joining force between historical touchstones, national affiliation and personal identity, Tambor y Ca?a acts as a catalyst for a meaningful appreciation of and fresh engagement with Afro-Venezuelan culture.

Screening | Here Moscow Calling: Romanian Theater on Film

A daughter's relationship with her father is always special, but how does it change if the father is a famous dictator? How does it feel when Dad is a "monster"? Which reality is the real one? Between family attachment and political conscience, the show proposes a live dissection of a controversial character in the history of the twentieth century. It confronts us with a sensitive process of both the past and the present, abolishing the binary morality of good versus evil. Here Moscow Calling dynamites the idea of unique truth and proposes to the audience an intense theatrical-cinematic experience, in which the camera becomes the main character and the reconstruction of the truth a puzzle to be solved individually. Moscow (still) does not believe in tears. Written by Iulia Pospelova

Play | Lowlands: Life Under Ceaușescu

A true work in progress, developing as the festival unfolds, Lowlands is a haunting depiction of the moral decomposition of the terminal years of communism seen through the eyes of a child from the German minority of Romania. It is based on a text by the Nobel Prize-winning writer Herta Müller, born in Romania in the sizeable German (Schwaben) ethnic group of Banat Region. The play offers a poignant portrayal of life under the repressive regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu and, using both poetry and frankness to convey the harsh realities of the time, captures the malaise of an existence suffocated by the constraints of both a dictatorship and a closed off community. It will be followed by a talk between Ana Margineanu, the director of the stage reading and Dorian Branea, RCINY’s director, on topics related to the play.
