Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Tuke / Nocturner

Szabolcs Bozo Tuke A self-taught talent who excelled at making contemporary art from the moment he turned his playful doodles into expressive paintings, Szabolcs Bozó has been exhibiting his colorful canvases and spirited works on paper internationally since being discovered on Instagram in 2018. Break-dancing his way through Milan to London in 2012, the young artist started drawing cartoon characters inspired by his native Hungarian folklore while working in a restaurant. When a Spanish gallery noticed his enticing drawings on Instagram, it offered him a residency in Mallorca and the rest—as they say—is history. Ryan Schneider Nocturner Vast and elemental, the allure of the Californian high desert is undeniable. The rugged landscape can be inhospitable and alien at times and mystical and magical at others. Strewn with craggy boulders, ringed by majestic mountains, and with expansive vistas as far as the eye can see, it is seductive in its unfamiliarity, its unknowability. There will always be more to discover, to explore, to conquer. For decades, artists have been captivated by the high desert’s magnetic energy, its magnificent light, and its promise of solitude, of space to think, reflect, and regenerate. It’s here—an hour from the nearest city—that Ryan Schneider has lived and worked for the last nine years.

Film | Persona (1966) Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Famed stage actress Elisabeth Vogler suffers a moment of blankness during a performance and the next day lapses into total silence. Advised by her doctor to take time off to recover from what appears to be an emotional breakdown, Elisabeth goes to a beach house on the Baltic Sea with only Anna, a nurse, as company. Over the next several weeks, as Anna struggles to reach her mute patient, the two women find themselves experiencing a strange emotional convergence. Director: Ingmar Bergman Cast: Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann Ingmar Bergman was a Swedish film and theatre director and screenwriter. Widely considered one of the greatest and most influential film directors of all time, his films have been described as "profoundly personal meditations into the myriad struggles facing the psyche and the soul." Book Discussion | Starring Joan Crawford: The Films, the Fantasy, and the Modern Relevance of a Silver Screen Icon

Samuel Garza Bernstein's rollicking exploration of the powerful women this iconic performer vividly brought to life in her films--and the lasting, ever-evolving impact she has had on popular culture. Having carved out a revolutionary path through the entertainment industry while relying on men--whether her studio bosses or her many husbands--as little as possible, she created a gallery of strong, assertive women who outsmarted men and refused to conform to gender expectations. In movies like Mildred Pierce, The Damned Don't Cry, Johnny Guitar, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, among many others, she played to win, becoming a lodestar for LGBT audiences, a model of feminist self-determination for women, and an unforgettable icon for everyone.

Opening Reception | The Moon is Just the Sun at Night: Group Show

A group exhibition that brings together works exploring the interconnectedness of our earthly lives and the mysteries beyond. While some of the exhibited artists explore themes of fear, tension, and existential unease through foreboding compositions and haunting netherworlds, others construct celestial and ethereal sanctuaries. Notions of lightness and darkness morph together and change shape across subjectivities – one person’s light is another’s dark, and what one considers heavenly, others may see as hellacious.  The global origins of the exhibited artists provides a richness that weaves geographically-specific concerns and epistemic commitments. Some artists investigate transformations, re/births, and religion seen through new lenses, and others negotiate with alienation, resistance to violent assimilation, and survival. Amid the dark, staggering lyricisms of their works, an astonishing corpus of paintings and sculpture have been brought forth to ignite conversation on what is repressed beneath surfaces that we construct. Surfaces that, for many of us, are crucial mechanisms for survival.

Opening Reception | The Selves: Group Exhibition

A group exhibition featuring work by Julia Chiang, Sally J. Han, Sheree Hovsepian, Na Kim, Anina Major, Nickola Pottinger, Elizabeth Schwaiger, Uman, and Alberta Whittle. The Selves considers the ways in which the assembled artists are uniquely attuned to notions of memory, growth, transience, illumination, and self-awareness—forces that shape consciousness—and are thus individually equipped to translate the psychic into the physical. Inherent to each portrait is a confrontation with the iterative nature of self—the artist as the mediator between obstacle and potential, interior and exterior, individuation and collectivism—charting the oscillations, rather than conclusions, that persistently sculpt self-knowledge.

Talk | Remembering Bohemian New York: A Toast to Pfaff's Cellar

Unbeknownst to most New Yorkers, a literary landmark lies beneath Greenwich Village's stretch of Broadway: Pfaff's Cellar Saloon, located below the twin tenements at 645-647 Broadway between 1859 - 1864, was America's first bohemian hotspot and home to one of the country's first gay men's clubs, the "Fred Gray Association."  Walt Whitman was a loyal Pfaffian who met many young men in this space, and was here inspired to write several of his most inspirational poems.  Come celebrate the legacy of Pfaff's with a reading and discussion, led by Whitman-scholar Karen Karbiener, of Whitman's poetic cluster, "Live Oak, with Moss," and find out how you can help honor the legacy of this unlandmarked, unprotected historical treasure. After the reading and discussion, Karen leads for a walk to the site of Pfaff'sSpeaker: Karen Karbiener is an internationally recognized Whitman scholar and teaches at New York University.

Book Discussion | Allan D'Arcangelo: A New Monograph

A conversation celebrating a major new monograph for Allan D’Arcangelo (1930–1998), whose iconic visions of life on the road merges a Pop sensibility with elements of Minimalism, Precisionism, and Hard-edge painting. The authors Alex Taylor, Evan Moffitt, and Cécile Whiting will be in conversation with artist Cory Arcangel, followed by a signing. Recognized as a major Pop artist in his day, Allan D’Arcangelo (1930–1998) has yet to receive the critical reevaluation of painters like Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. His first monograph in nearly a decade introduces new audiences to his iconic paintings, particularly his celebrated visions of life on the road. Like Pop peers Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha, Allan D’Arcangelo incorporated mass-manufactured images in works that elevate scenes of everyday American life. While his work often features imagery from more familiar 1960s art—Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, smoking pin-up girls, Superman, Lucky Strike—it differs in the surreal elements he introduced to Pop tropes and romantic views of the American industrial landscape.

Concert | Celebrating Stuttering Voices: A Musical Intervention

JJJJJerome Ellis describes themselves as a “Jamaican-Grenadian-American, disabled animal, stutterer, and artist” who speaks with a glottal block stutter, an involuntary speech dysfluency that manifests in pauses while talking. The artist explores relationships between Blackness, disabled speech, divinity, plant life, sound, and time. Their practice spans various formats, including soundscapes composed of saxophone, dulcimer, electronics, and vocals; spoken and written word; and theatrical performances. Celebrating Stuttering Voices includes a combination of live saxophone and electronic sound. Ellis views this as a musical intervention for both the people and the plants on the High Line. The artist worked with the park horticulture team to learn about the various plants growing by the Lawn, and incorporated this research into their musical performance—as JJJJJerome paces around the garden with their saxophone, they name and discuss the various species. In this vein, Celebrating Stuttering Voices is as much about creating music for the site and the human audience, as it is creating music for the flower and plant audience.

Celebrate the 49th anniversary of the 1975 debut album of Cortex's Troupeau Bleu. The band will perform the iconic album in its entirety for their second EVER performance in NYC. Over the years, Cortex's music has made its way to global audiences through Hip-Hop. As it stands, Cortex is one of the most sampled artists from France, appearing in tracks from Tyler The Creator, Flying Lotus, Conway The Machine, and most notably MF DOOM & Madlib. There is hardly any comparison for the first time one hears the legendary French Jazz-Funk band, Cortex. Like tearing a sports car down the C?te d'Azur, their crisp bass lines and seductive piano stabs conjure fantasies of playful hedonism, sun-drenched luxury, and escape. Among the numerous European groups that absorbed American Funk and Jazz influences during the 1970s, few are as celebrated, or as mysterious.
