Fair | October 7th, 06:29AM: An Immersive Exhibition on Nova Music Festival Massacre

To celebrate the end of his two years of service as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces' paratrooper division, Tomer Meir joined 13 of his friends at the Nova Musica Festival on the weekend of October 6 in Re'im in southern Israel. It was his first ever music festival. "It was the best moments of my life. I can't explain the state we were in," the 21-year-old told the New York Jewish Week. "It was pure love -- people dancing, laughing, smiling. All the good stuff that we're living for." Until 6:29 a.m. on Saturday morning. The red alerts, the rockets and the running. "The music stopped. The rockets started. We started running for our lives," Meir said. Meir is a survivor of the Nova Music Festival Massacre, where Hamas militants killed 364 festival-goers and took at least 40 hotstages on the morning of Oct. 7. Six months after the attack, Meir is in New York sharing his story as part of an interactive exhibit about that day, which he says is helping him heal. The Nova Musical Festival exhibition, titled October 7th, 06:29AM, is an immersive step into what it was like to be at the festival when it was attacked. Screens show clips from the attack on Nova are displayed next to personal and camping items taken from the festival recreating the festival layout. The exhibit, which debuted in Tel Aviv for 10 weeks in December, was created by Israeli designers and cultural producers, many of whom were producers with the Nova Music Festival itself. It was brought to New York with the help of Scooter Braun, the Jewish-American music producer and philanthropist. The exhibit recreates the visuals and sounds of the Nova Music Festival massacre. But the New York version is in some ways "more intense," according to Yael Finkelstein, a volunteer who collected items from the Nova site and helped set up both the Tel Aviv and New York exhibit. New elements at the New York exhibit include dozens of video testimonies from survivors, Zaka volunteers and family members, as well as graphic raw footage taken on Oct. 7 from both festival-goers and Hamas militants. In addition, survivors of the massacre such as Meir and Sassi will be at the exhibit every day to share their stories and answer questions. Their goal, Meir said, is to show New Yorkers that the horror they experienced could happen to anyone.

Concert | Tilted Axes: Strawberry Solstice

Music for mobile electric guitars. It's a musical procession for the first day of summer and the full strawberry moon. It contains a foray into the neighborhood with stops at places of interest. Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars is an ensemble created in 2011 and led by composer Patrick Grant. Now in its 12th season, the project takes on aspects of spectacle informed by the traditions of urban street bands, avant-garde theater, and ancient music. It takes music out into the world and seeks transformative situations meant to change the conversation. Tilted Axes perform exciting original compositions and a couple of unique arrangements of seasonal tunes, sonic structures comprised of burbling polyrhythms, and contemplative grooves for deep listeners. They will premiere a new piece, "Strawberry Solstice" and well as some surprises, it's a tilted tradition.

Abadd?n exemplifies the rich tradition of the tango sextet, showcasing the versatility and artistry to be found at the very pinnacle of the art. Established in 2016 by an accomplished band of east coast musicians based in New York and Philadelphia--including Shinjoo Cho and David Hodges on bandoneons, Sergio Reyes and Ina Paris on violins, Emilio Teubal on piano, and Pablo Lanouguere on bass, with guest musicians Alejo de los Reyes on guitar and vocalist Paula Serrano--the Abadd?n collective has played to full houses and rave reviews at major arts and culture festivals around the world. Individually, Abbad?n's members are all active performers, composers, and musical instructors, spreading the vibrant gospel of tango wherever they go. The program begins with a short instructional class to teach newcomers the basic steps and dance floor etiquette. Dancers of all backgrounds and ability levels are invited!

Performance | whale fall abyss: Performance Art on the Decomposition of Bodies

Choreographer mayfield brooks' work started virtually as an experimental dance film in 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 epidemic. When Whale Fall (the film) premiered, brooks wrote, “This project was born out of a desire to sit with grief and rage in a world that discards too much and consumes too much. As a result, the bodies of whales and the bodies of Black folk seem to have a kinship in how they have been both targeted, hunted and consumed since the transatlantic slave trade. I have also come to know that some slave ships were used as whaling vessels.” In this present moment of continued environmental destruction caused by war and accelerated global warming, brooks is asking, “What light reaches us? What darkness welcomes the reckoning?”  After four years of rigorous research and numerous iterations, brooks’s ever evolving project continues to decompose itself. This iteration lives as a call to the wild parts of ourselves, a denouement to complacent attitudes towards death and decay. How are we entangled in the ruse of romance with our compulsion to consume and our dependence on war machines? Why do we continue to kill? How can the whale fall reorient us to face our own mortality with more compassion?  brooks considers the whale fall as a reckoning. They imagine their ancestor’s bones mingling with whale bones beckoning us to embrace interspecies care and relation beyond the human. Perhaps we can save the whales, ourselves, and the planet if we simply decompose. Performers: mayfield brooks, performer; Dorothy Carlos, electric cellist; Camilo Restrepo, performer

Screening | Playing Earl Turner: Theater on Film

More than a decade ago, the right-wing extremist terrorist cell known as NSU came across the novel The Turner Diaries by American neo-Nazi William L. Pierce. Initially unnoticed, subsequent trials revealed that this work served as a guide not only for the terrorists in Germany but also for other neo-Nazis worldwide. The performancecombines documentary material with fictional literature and, through the confrontation of NSU trial transcripts and scenes from The Turner Diaries, creates a disturbing scenario that fundamentally questions the common notion of lone perpetrators.   Written by Laura Andres and Stefan Schweigert
