In this presentation, photographer Lester Lefkowitz will inform you of the basics of getting close, the terminology, and the relatively simple and inexpensive ways to get started with macro photography. There are an infinite number of small things all around us that make fascinating photographic subjects. The techniques necessary to make great images of diminutive subjects are somewhat different from those for conventional photography. Using scores of great photographs, you'll learn about close-up filters, extension tubes, and macro lenses; how camera types affect your technique and results; how to handle what becomes very limited depth-of-field; proper methods for the tricky aspects of close-up focusing; and even some suggestions as to what you might photograph (sure, lots of examples of bugs and flowers, too).

Screening | 155th Birthday Celebration of Marcel Proust, one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century

The celebration will include screening of the documentary of Marcel Proust: A Writer's Life (1993) - a film about the life and work of Marcel Proust with emphasis on his struggle to realize the 3,000 page masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past (A la recherche du temps perdu). Includes archival film footage. Book discussion follows. Alongside figures such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Franz Kafka, Proust shifted literature toward subjective experience. Proust's biggest innovation may actually be his treatment of memory--especially what he called "involuntary memory". In Remembrance of Things Past (known as well as In Search of Lost Time), time is not a simple chronological sequence, past and present constantly interact through memory. This approach influenced countless later writers. The documentary is directed by Sarah Mondale.

Opening Reception | Interlude of Joy: Dynamic Solo Painting Exhibition

This exhibition features new paintings by Helen Marden. The presentation introduces Marden’s largest works to date, including her first paintings in a triptych format, smaller circular paintings, and watercolors. Marden paints with acrylic, resin, and powdered pigment, working on canvas panels placed on the studio floor or exterior ground. She applies vivid hues with dynamic gestures in glossy, translucent pours and looping, gestural strands across multiple white panels. She paints other works on smaller round canvases, producing dense compositions with intensely saturated concentrations of color.  The exhibition in New York is titled after the poem “Interlude of Joy” by George Seferis, a Greek poet and the 1963 Nobel laureate in Literature. Its verses communicate the elation prompted by experiences of nature, while ending with the lament “I don’t understand people: / no matter how much they play with colours / they all remain pitch-black.” Marden is motivated by both nature and culture. Watercolor allows her to paint while traveling, and reflects the breadth of her influences, including recent time spent in Greece, India, and Morocco. Varied brushstrokes fill these works, merging and diverging in directional streams and interwoven tendrils of bright hues.
