Concert | Hip-Hop: Planet Hemp / Gaby Amarantos / Emicida

Planet Hemp first hit the scene in 1993 when Marcelo D2 and Skunk, founding members, joined together to become a rap duo in Brazil. Soon they were joined by musicians Rafael, Bacalhau and Formigão which fused the groups rap origin with a little bit of rock, psychedelia, and hardcore. Born and raised in Brazil, Gaby Amarantos grew up surrounded by music. The “Tecnobrega” queen makes it clear that her main influence for her music is the neighborhood where she was born, where everything is played at the same time. Technobrega fuses together Techno music with brega, which referes to “tacky” and cheesy romantic music. Hailing from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Emicida began his career in 2006 when he sang his first rhymes at freestyle battles and underground parties throughout the city. In 2009, Emicida released, independently distributed, and sold more than 10,000 copies of his first mixtape. In 2010, the rapper released two mixtapes, which helped him become one of the leading names of the new Brazilian Hip-Hop generation.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: Cymbeline, Presented by The Drilling Company

Cymbeline has a complex, not a simple narrative, and is sometimes classified as a problem play because it is part history, part tragedy and part comedy. The marriage of Imogen and Posthumus is tested in the context of a rebellion of the Britons against the Roman Empire. Shows are offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun.
