Opening Reception | Photographs: Rachel Hulin's The Flying Series

The inspiration for Rachel Hulin’s photographic series came largely from her 6-month-old son, Henry. Like many babies, Henry loved being held in the air aloft and sailed about the room. Hulin photographed him on a few occasions and soon took note of how it seemed her son was caught up in his own experience—floating apart, if you will. In American Photo Magazine, Hulin commented: “It was an allegory for how he seemed so in his own world. I was always trying to figure out what was going on in his mind.”

Slide Lecture | Marian Moser Jones discusses her book The American Red Cross from Clara Barton to the New Deal

This illustrated lecture examines how humanity and neutrality, the two ideals that early Red Cross leaders chose as guiding principles, took on varied and sometimes conflicting meanings in the context of real-world emergencies. In this lecture, the author also highlights Clara Barton's humanitarian work in Cuba and its New York connections. She discusses the controversies and conflicts that surrounded this work, how Clara Barton unwittingly helped build the case for the U.S. invasion of Cuba in 1898, and how this work led to a major leadership shake-up at the American Red Cross.

Concert | 3 Art Song Vocalists

Art song gets earthy and edgy with three compelling, genre-defying female vocalists. With a voice that ranges from ethereal to earth-shaking, the Ukrainian-born Mariana Sadovska finds fresh iterations of age-old Slavic melodies and aching traditional songs while accompanying herself on harmonium. She collaborates with Kronos Quartet in a "pagan requiem," exploring ideas of destruction and creation. Emily Wells embraces hip-hop, gospel, symphonic flights of fancy, and quirky layered pop to create atmospheric, infectious songs with live loops of keys, strings, beats, and vocals. Shara Worden's velvety, delicate voice floats beautifully over My Brightest Diamond's sonically inventive alt-rock experiments.

Jazz | Let Freedom Swing Concert

Jazz grew out of the African-American community in turn of the 20th century New Orleans. It is a mingling of the musical expressions of all the people who came to the United States by choice or by force — people from Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean — as well as those already living in America. Jazz musicians brought their traditions together (with special emphasis on the blues, church spirituals and ragtime) in a new, universal language. Through the blues, jazz musicians showed that the sorrows common to us all could be overcome with optimism and humor. Through improvisation they celebrated newfound expressive freedom. And through the joyous rhythms of swing, they taught the many different people of New Orleans that they could work together with feeling and style. This concert will illustrate the ideals of American democracy, the struggle for freedom, and the beauty of self-expression through the lens of America's greatest and most democratic art form - jazz.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: Cymbeline, Presented by The Drilling Company

Cymbeline has a complex, not a simple narrative, and is sometimes classified as a problem play because it is part history, part tragedy and part comedy. The marriage of Imogen and Posthumus is tested in the context of a rebellion of the Britons against the Roman Empire. Shows are offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun.
