Concert | Yuletide Sing-Along in the Park

The Rob Susman Brass Quartet, song leader, and the revelers from all over the city will lustily sing out the familiar tunes. The words are in the songbooks distributed, but many will know them by heart; “Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men” resounding with special meaning this season. Yule is the ancient name in the Germanic lunar calendar for a winter festival corresponding to December and January. Later, yule referred to the twelve-day holiday associated with the Feast of the Nativity after the widespread adoption of Christianity through Northern Europe. Classical Music | Annual Handel's Messiah Concert

Handel's (1685-1759) Messiah. About the piece Handel's Messiah is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. After an initially modest public reception of its premiere in 1742, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Handel wrote the piece for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. In the years after his death, the work was adapted for performance on a much larger scale, with giant orchestras and choirs. In other efforts to update it, its orchestration was revised and amplified by (among others) Mozart.

Classical Music | Christmas Carols: Silent Night and more

Relive the magic of that Christmas Eve in 1818 when the world first heard Silent Night. The New York Weinachtschor sings a selection of popular English and other carols and also leads the audience in singing the music that makes Christmas. Soloists include Katrin Bulke, soprano from Salzburgerland in Austria, the home of Silent Night. Silent Night is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863) to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers from every music genre. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the third best-selling single of all-time. A reception of hot spiced drinks and sweetmeets follows the carol concert.
