Film | Ingmar Bergman's The Silence (1963): two sides of a single woman

The film focuses on two sisters, the younger a sensuous woman with a young son, the elder more intellectually oriented and seriously ill, and their tense relationship as they travel toward home through a fictional Central European country on the brink of war. 105 min. The film is the third in a series of thematically related films, following Through a Glass Darkly (1961) and Winter Light (1963), which is sometimes considered a trilogy.' Ernst Ingmar Bergman (1918 – 2007) was a Swedish director, writer, and producer who worked in film, television, theatre and radio. Considered to be among the most accomplished and influential filmmakers of all time, Bergman's renowned works include Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), The Silence (1963), Persona (1966), Cries and Whispers (1972), Scenes from a Marriage (1973), and Fanny and Alexander (1982).

Discussion | Experimental Theatre and Performance Publishing

Why publish a play in the 21st century? What are the limits of performance and paper—and what becomes possible when they converge? Can something be so analog that it becomes futuristic? In the last decades, independent publishing houses have taken up the challenge to re-think the relationship between print and performance in our times of post-dramatic theatre and ubiquitous virtual texts. Mac Wellman, publishers Matvei Yankelevich (Ugly Duckling Presse), Kate Kremer (53rd State Press), Rachel Kauder Nalebuff (3 Hole Press) and affiliate artists from each press hold conversations and readings from newly released works.
