Book Club | John Steinbeck's Cannery Row

Unburdened by the material necessities of the more fortunate, the denizens of Cannery Row discover rewards unknown in more traditional society. Henry the painter sorts through junk lots for pieces of wood to incorporate into the boat he is building, while the girls from Dora Flood's bordello venture out now and then to enjoy a bit of sunshine. Lee Chong stocks his grocery with almost anything a man could want, and Doc, a young marine biologist who ministers to sick puppies and unhappy souls, unexpectedly finds true love. Cannery Row is just a few blocks long, but the story it harbors is suffused with warmth, understanding, and a great fund of human values. John Steinbeck Jr. (1902-1968) was an American author. He won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." He has been called "a giant of American letters," and many of his works are considered classics of Western literature.

City Walk | Historic Brooklyn Bridge Tour

On May 24, 1883, journalist Montgomery Schuyler said "It so happens that the work which is likely to be our most durable monument, and to convey some knowledge of us to the most remote posterity, is a work of bare utility; not a shrine, not a fortress, not a palace, but a bridge." This tour will tell the story of the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge, and examine its ever-present historical, technological, and cultural impact. Note: this tour is held early, as to avoid the massive crowds that the bridge continues to attract, 135 years after its completion.

Staged Reading | A new play adapted from Willa Cather’s short stories

A reading of a new play with music by Navida Stein. Adapted from Willa Cather’s first short stories. In this reading of The Willa Cather Salon the stories are told by a cast of actor/singer/storytellers and woven together with vocal and instrumental music from the turn of last century. These stories explore the need to belong and create, the transformative power of music and the desire for beauty in a brutal world; all themes Willa Cather continually explored throughout her life’s work. As an adult, Willa Cather made New York City her home and lived for many years at 5 Bank Street in Greenwich Village, right around the corner from Jefferson Market Library. Miss Cather would hold very popular salons on Friday afternoons; writers, musicians, actors and opera singers would come for tea, conversation and share their art. Willa Cather (1873-1947) is an American writer best known for her novels O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, and My Ántonia. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for her World War I novel One of Ours.

Discussion | Past the Mic: Time Travelers and MCs

The Legendary Cyphers, a group of talented MCs who have lead a weekly freestyle rap circle in Union Square, will discuss how time functions in hip-hop lyrics, and then drop some bars. Moderated by exhibition curator, S.I. Rosenbaum. As a genre, rap is built on allusion. In order to parse hip-hop lyrics, the listener has to be master of a huge corpus of historical, personal and cultural narratives that are often combined and juxtaposed within a single bar. The effect is to collapse time: the song exists in a space that has access to all points of the speaker’s personal and generational history. With exhibition curator, S.I. Rosenbaum, The Legendary Cyphers will discuss how time functions in hip hop lyrics and then drop some bars.

Classical Music | One of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music

MSM Chamber Sinfonia with the New York City Master Chorale: Messiah Reimagined. About the Piece Handel's (1685-1759) Messiah is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. After an initially modest public reception of its premiere in 1742, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Handel wrote the piece for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. In the years after his death, the work was adapted for performance on a much larger scale, with giant orchestras and choirs. In other efforts to update it, its orchestration was revised and amplified by (among others) Mozart.
