Party | Traditional English afternoon tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

Screening | Hierophant Hysteria: Short Works by Female Filmmakers

These films rupture the mirage of a smooth, canonical, singular female body in visual history. Instead, they present a plurality of perspectives, giving voice to the body, rejecting the conception of womanhood that generations of reclining nudes have created. The figures in the films of Hierophant Hysteria are energized, not complacent or recumbent. They are makers, hunters, athletes, protagonists, and doers. The women of these films stare back at the audience, calling on us to see the world with active eyes. A hierophant (Ancient Greek: ἱεροφάντης) is a person who brings religious congregants into the presence of that which is deemed holy. The word comes from ancient Greece, where it was constructed from the combination of ta hiera, "the holy", and phainein, "to show". (Wikipedia) Works in show: Mavi Philips, La Petite Mort: 10 min. Rose Nestler, Gymnasia: 10 min. Jennifer Reiland, La Voisin: 2 min. Katy McCarthy, The Posers: 16 min. Jennifer Reiland, Three of Cups: 4 min. Joiri Minaya, Siboney: 10 min.

Author Reading | Jane Benson: A Place for Infinite Tuning

This book surveys the landscape of British-born, New York based artist Jane Benson’s acute, yet lyrical practice, forging a trajectory through the past decade as she splits, fractures and skews archetypal structures into poignant re-assemblies. It is Benson’s first major monograph, printed on the occasion of her 2017 survey exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Notions of creation and destruction may seem diametrically opposed, but their uneasy, yet generative exchange has re-shaped the face of both art and the world it reflects. With a delicate, but poignant approach to dismantling and rebuilding, Benson has conducted a systematic campaign of deconstruction since the beginning of her career. Seeking to better reflect the multiple facets of the self as well as families separated by war, travel and trade, her amalgams forge a nascent place for renewal, plurality and gathering. This book surveys work from the past fifteen years of Benson’s practice, discussing installations, video, drawing, sculpture and performances that regenerate familiar objects, texts and settings into vexing new formations.
