Concert | Nowhere: Pianist Performs 12 Hours a Day for 14 Consecutive Days

For fourteen consecutive days, twelve hours a day, pianist Marino Formenti will perform at the venue -- where he will also live in a space that is mercilessly both public and private. We invite you to come and go freely, to listen to music in a different dimension, with Formenti playing the piano daily, from morning to night. With round-the-clock live streaming, you can also experience and share his days at a distance. Nowhere is a non-place in the middle of the city. Marino Formenti performs, eats, sleeps, and lives all in the same space -- a metaphorical, silent, musical 'glass house' that is also surrounded and on view by the daily life of the city. In a performance about music, time, and togetherness, Formenti questions any and all divisions between performance and life. Days become music. Come and stay, leave and come back, listen or ignore the pianist, sleep, read, write, draw, lie down -- to experience music, time, and togetherness in another way. August 14-28, 2019

Lesson | Genealogy Research With Maps

New York Public Library’s Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division collections are national and international in scope, and comprise 433,000 maps and 20,000 books and atlases, an invaluable resource for genealogists the world over. Holdings include:  Topographical maps that describe where our ancestors lived, the names of settlements, towns and cities, the effect of the landscape on the migration routes our ancestors took, the kinds of work they did, and the location of cultural features, including churches, cemeteries, fence lines, boundaries, and buildings. Fire insurance maps that help genealogists find records associated with historical property addresses, churches and cemeteries, hospitals, and courts: records that help prove lineage. Fire insurance maps also describe the neighborhoods where our ancestors lived, the location of schools, libraries, theaters and cinemas, and places of business, information that helps a genealogist develop narratives.  Historical maps that describe political and electoral boundaries, including wards and census enumeration districts; the location of piers and other sites of immigration; routes of transatlantic steamships, subways, canals, roads, and railroads; real estate for sale, and property ownership.  This class will describe how maps in the collections of The New York Public Library can be used to drive genealogical research and illustrate family histories.

Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Poetry Is Not a Luxury

Poetry Is Not a Luxury considers how book arts have contributed to the recording of oppositional subjectivities in the U.S. The exhibition is titled after Audre Lorde’s 1977 essay on the intersections of creativity and activism that were not only essential to her own work but to a diverse group of feminist thinkers at the time. Recognizing that both creative work and activism are driven by subjectivity, Lorde argues that for women poetry is not a luxury but a vital necessity, as it provides a framework through which survival and the desire for change can be articulated, conceptualized, and transformed into meaningful action. With artist Joyce Dallal and Maymanah Farhat.

Opening Reception | Home Plate: A Celebration of the Polo Grounds

Since its construction in 1765, the Morris-Jumel Mansion has witnessed countless changes to the property and built environment. The original estate stretched from the Hudson to Harlem Rivers before being sold in parcels at various points throughout the 19th century and incorporated in the city grid. In 1890, the third incarnation of the Polo Grounds rose within the gaze of the Mansion on former riverfront property where the Morris’ and Jumels’ harvested oysters. The iconic bathtub shaped stadium at the Polo Grounds served as home to the New York Giants baseball team from 1891- 1957, the New York Yankees from 1913 - 22, the New York Giants football team from 1925-55, New York Mets from 1962-1963, as well as other professional teams and athletic events. This property, which lies east of the Mansion, just below Coogan’s Bluff, lays claim to some of the most exciting moments in American sports history. The exhibition will explore and celebrate those teams, players, and personalities that solidified the stadium as a New York icon and famed venue where local and national heroes cemented their reputations and legacies. Included in the exhibition are extraordinarily rare autographs, tickets, photos, programs, and other ephemera that serves to commemorate the ghosts of this legendary New York athletic pantheon.

August is Women in Translation month, an initiative started by Biblibio blogger Meytal Radzinski in 2014 to shine light on writing and translations by women and work toward gender parity in literary publishing. This evening will showcase the work of translators and authors, while highlighting the importance of gender parity for free expression. This is a reading and discussion with women translators of women writers working in Turkish, Italian, and Arabic: Sevinç Türkkan (The Stone Building and Other Places, by Aslı Erdoğan); Ann Goldstein and Jenny McPhee (Neapolitan Chronicles, by Anna Maria Ortese); and Inea Bushnaq (Pearls on a Branch, by Najla Jraissaty Khoury). The event will be moderated by Jenny Wang Medina (assistant professor of Korean literature, Emory University) and Alex Zucker (translator of Czech literature).
