Concert | Nowhere: Pianist Performs 12 Hours a Day for 14 Consecutive Days

For fourteen consecutive days, twelve hours a day, pianist Marino Formenti will perform at the venue -- where he will also live in a space that is mercilessly both public and private. We invite you to come and go freely, to listen to music in a different dimension, with Formenti playing the piano daily, from morning to night. With round-the-clock live streaming, you can also experience and share his days at a distance. Nowhere is a non-place in the middle of the city. Marino Formenti performs, eats, sleeps, and lives all in the same space -- a metaphorical, silent, musical 'glass house' that is also surrounded and on view by the daily life of the city. In a performance about music, time, and togetherness, Formenti questions any and all divisions between performance and life. Days become music. Come and stay, leave and come back, listen or ignore the pianist, sleep, read, write, draw, lie down -- to experience music, time, and togetherness in another way. August 14-28, 2019

Workshop | Origami Meetup Group

A group for people to come together and share in the beautiful art of Origami - the ancient art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). Other materials often folded are fabric, wire mesh, sheet metal, tissue, thin plastic, cardboard, and straws. Origami, from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper" is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin. The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques.

Concert | Black Woodstock 50th Anniversary Concert

As a kickoff to the national Future Sounds tour highlighting communities across the country, this concert celebrates the 50th year anniversary of the Harlem Cultural Festival. Taking place in the summer of 1969, the original festival held a series of concerts in Mount Morris Park (now known as Marcus Garvey Park), to celebrate black pride, empowerment, music, and culture, and featured the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly & the Family Stone, Jesse Jackson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, and others. Curated by Neal Ludevig, a founder of the Harlem Arts Festival, musical direction by Igmar Thomas (who has collaborated and led with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Mos Def, Esperanza Spalding, Lauryn Hill and Nas), co-hosted by Talib Kweli, the fiercely independent MC known for his incisive, hard-hitting socially conscious raps and for Black Star, and with jazz trumpeter and singer Keyon Harrold (who has performed with Common, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Rihanna, and most recently was heard on Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis documentary Miles Ahead, this concert will feature a number of surprise special guests.

Discussion | Interventions and Uprisings Across Africa

Over the course of two evenings, The Polis Project and Warscapes magazine will host conversations on current imperialist interventions across Africa, their connections to militarized policing and surveillance in the United States, the wave of political uprisings on the continent, with a focus on recent movements in Algeria and Sudan, and the importance of transnational solidarities in the face of repression at home and abroad. -- Corinna Mullin is visiting professor of international relations and adjunct professor of political science at John Jay College in New York City. -- Samar Al-Bulushi is a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor (beginning Fall 2019) in the Department of Anthropology at UC Irvine. -- Nisrin Elamin Adbelrahman is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Stanford University whose research focuses on the ways Gulf corporate investments in land are reshaping quotidian social relations between landless and landholding stakeholders in the Gezira region of central Sudan. -- Brahim Rouabah is a PhD student at the Graduate Center, CUNY, whose research focuses on non-Western political theory in African and West Asia.
