Concert | Carnegie Hall Citywide: From Brazilian Folk Fusion to Irish Fiddle to Zydeco

A colorful celebration of music by dynamic and diverse performers. Matuto, whose name means "country boy" in Brazilian slang, has been described as "weird and wonderful...unorthodox and delightful" by JazzTimes. Hear why when this lively quartet takes Brazilian folk music and shakes it up with the flatpicking guitars and fiery fiddles of American bluegrass to create a musical experience the group likens to "Brazilian Carnival in the Appalachian Mountains." Anchored by Clay Ross's guitar and Rob Curto's accordion, Matuto's joyous explorations of folk, world, and jazz styles are invigorating. Consider every possibility for what's exciting and daring in Irish fiddle playing and Eileen Ivers surpasses them all. This Grammy Award winner, Emmy nominee, and nine-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion has played with major orchestras around the globe, as well as such luminaries as Sting, The Chieftains, Patti Smith, and countless others. Called "the Jimi Hendrix of the violin" (The New York Times), she is deeply rooted in tradition while remaining dedicated to exploring new possibilities for the instrument. Zydeco--that intoxicating, accordion-driven South Louisiana blend of Cajun, Afro-Caribbean, and African American popular music--burns brightly when Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas perform. Nathan Williams's accordion playing sets the boisterous tone, while his brother Dennis's jazz-tinged guitar brings a unique flavor to the music. Bass, drums, and rubboard add extra spice to this Louisiana-styled musical gumbo for a performance that will get your feet moving, fingers snapping, and heart pounding.

With the advent of Twitter, Instagram, and even more personalized services like Tapas and Webtoon, it is easier than ever for people to share and access webcomics. So why are webcomics and webcomic artists still thought of as second-rate compared to the print industry? Panelists Olive Rae Brinker, Ravi Teixeira and Skimlines, with Joan Dark as moderator, discuss the extreme importance of webcomics as a means of breaking down publishing barriers and telling stories that otherwise wouldn’t be found on store shelves. Concert | Legacy Of Marvin Gaye's Album What's Going On By Well-Known Artists

What's Going On, Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic concept album sung from the point of view of a Vietnam vet who returns home to a country torn by hatred, suffering, and injustice, has become a cultural touchstone--and its relevance today is chilling. The brilliant guitarist and bandleader Felicia Collins (The Late Show with David Letterman) gathers a host of friends including Toshi Reagon, Siedah Garrett, Kecia Lewis, and more to be announced, with an all-star band featuring Terri Lyne Carrington, Bette Sussman, Alexa Tarantino, Nicki Richards, Tabitha Fair, La Tanya Hall, Valerie Naranjo, and Deah Harriott, for a deep dive into Gaye's legacy, as they play the record in its entirety. After its release in 1971 What's Going On met with immediate critical and commercial success and soon came to be regarded as a landmark recording in American popular music. Rolling Stone ranked it sixth on the magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Music Director Felicia Collins is best known around the world as the guitarist and vocalist in the CBS Orchestra on The Late Show with David Letterman / World's Most Dangerous Band with Paul Shaffer. Prior to The Late Show, Felicia was the lead guitarist and vocalist in Al Jarreau's band and then a member of Cyndi Lauper's band. She has also led her own bands: 360 (a power trio starting with Will Lee and Anton Fig), and B!tchslapp, which went on to become Felicia Collins and the Life.
