Concert | VP Records's 40th Anniversary Concert

It’s been 40 years since Vincent and Patricia Chin set up VP Records in Jamaica, Queens; the success of that shop would prompt them to found VP Records, now one of the most important sources of reggae and dancehall music in the world. To celebrate, VP hosts a showcase with some of its illustrious alumni: Elephant Man, whose 2003 hit “Pon di River, Pon di Bank” and collaborations with Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes helped further blur the lines between dancehall and hip hop; Junior Reid, the former Black Uhuru vocalist whose 1989 classic “One Blood” has spawned countless remakes and interpolations; Estelle, the genre-bending, Grammy-winning English singer best known for her Kanye West collaboration “American Boy” and now has her own album, Lover’s Rock, with VP; and Grammy-nominated Raging Fyah, a five-piece band from Kingston, Jamaica that makes music bound to the roots rock reggae tradition.

Concert | A Woman and a Cello: Witty Lyrics, Plucking Bass

While New Yorkers and tourists were flocking to Central Park to catch a glimpse of the Mandarin Duck, musician Erin Hall was searching for another bird, the Great Blue Heron. Hidden in the winter shadows, Erin found wonder, solace and the inspiration for her new album, Great Blue. Hall, who for the last decade has been charming audiences as "Erin and Her Cello", is still a witty lyricist, plucking bass lines on her cello with the same swinging band, but this album presents more self reflection, more depth, as well as more confidence in Hall's songwriting and arranging abilities.

Concert | Colombian Music By Grammy Nominated Band

Led by founder Simón Mejía and the explosive singer and rapper Li Saumet, the Bogotá based electro cumbia superstars Bomba Estereo make “kinetic dance songs that jitter with so much electricity and energy that they sound as if they could blow up your speakers” (Washington Post). Bomba Estéreo has its origins in 2001, when Mejía was part of a loose collective of musicians and visual artists called A.M. 770, which was influenced by Colombian groups like Sidestepper and Bloque de Busqueda, who had started combining the traditional Colombian sounds of salsa and cumbia with electronic beats and dance music. The band had a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock Urban or Alternative Album for their album Amanecer (2016).  Fiery local Colombian expat outfit Delsonido gets the party started right. Founded in 2014 in Brooklyn, NY, Delsonido came together when two of its founding members Elkin Pautt and Ivan Garizabalo, Colombians hailing from Barranquilla, wanted an outlet for blending their Caribbean influences with the sounds they were encountering in the vibrant NYC music scene.

Concert | Grammy Award-Winning New Queen of Country Soul

Fresh off a world tour, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Patty Griffin graces the stage. The quintessential Americana artist lends her seasoned wisdom to a new eponymous LP--whose lead track "River" was inspired by Leon Russell's "A Song for You," made famous by R&B singer Donny Hathaway. With her melancholy poise and pendulous jazz phrasing, she proves she is still one of folk music's most genre-expanding artists. Opening the evening is arresting British singer Yola, whose thrilling debut album Walk Through Fire (produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach) has established her as the new queen of country soul.
