After the 2009 currency devaluations, markets saw a swell in opposition--which led the central government to reportedly execute the official in charge of the devaluation effort. For NAUH and those who have fled the North Korean regime, jangmadang are where some authorities crackdown on sellers, buyers and beggars. NAUH’s refugee and student troupe visits New York for a first time, and it’s inaugural performance takes place at The Korea Society. Several of the performers are North Korean refugees abused in the jangmadang; they chose to flee North Korea after persecution. Their powerful performance showcases ongoing human rights abuses and the struggle within North Korean markets. The 12-minute performance is followed by a short discussion and lite fare.
