Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Workshop | Urban Sketching Workshop

Urban sketching has become a popular pursuit. Bryant park is an ideal location for this workshop because of the variety of people and activities within it and the architecture that surrounds it. Using a “scribble and refine” approach to drawing, with a simple ink pen, will build confidence. Practice how to really “see” what is in front of us, and capture it on the page by looking at shapes instead of objects, and exploring the spaces and connections between things. Adding words, collage and color will help you learn to fill the page and create a visual diary of the world around us. Learn to record the story of your life through sketches. An accomplished watercolor artist, instructor Marilyn Rose is a signature member of many art organizations including the Catharine Lorillard Wolf Art Club, The Northeast Watercolor Club and The New Jersey Water Color Club. She has won numerous awards in juried shows and plein air events, teaches regular classes in the tri-state area at the Art School at the Old Church in Demarest, NJ and is often asked to give workshops and demonstrations.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Screening | New York Essence: short films from the 60s-70s, stories by New Yorkers

“Roaches’ Lullaby” (1973) A humorous film which features interviews with three zealous New York City roach-haters who demonstrate their own extermination techniques and recount - in hilarious detail - their own personal experiences with cockroaches. Includes an original musical composition lamenting the presence of this pesty insect in urban life. “How to Look at a City” (1964) Eugene Raskin paints a word portrait of New York, as seen by lovers, adventurers, and the star-struck, against a background of jazz. He contrasts old neighborhoods with the bustle of the business world and discusses three fundamental standards used by architects and planners to judge the quality of a neighborhood - human scale, density, and variety. “Life in New York” (1969) Made by teenagers, this film is an exhortation to the people of the Lower East Side in New York City to unite and improve their neighborhoods. Shots of fashionable Park Avenue are intercut with shots of garbage-filled empty lots and drug abuse on the Lower East Side throughout this strong indictment of socio-economic disparity. “Bowery Men's Shelter” (1972) A portrait of the Men's Shelter on East 3rd Street in New York City. It is the only home for many alcoholics, drug addicts and ex-mental patients. “Flaming Creatures” (1963) Sensual underground classic film which pushed the limits of its day while surviving attempts to censor its content. Banned in 22 U.S. states and four countries. Please arrive early. All registered seats are released 15 minutes before start time.

Film | Jeff Kaufman's Savoy King (2012): life and work of drummer and band leader Chick Webb

The Savoy Ballroom was the home of the Lindy Hop dancers, and the first venue in America where Blacks and Whites could dance and socialize together. Chick Webb developed childhood spinal tuberculosis and was a hunchbacked dwarf in constant pain, yet he virtually invented modern drumming and built the hottest Swing orchestra of the 1930s - the ‘house band’ of The Savoy Ballroom. Chick was mentored by Duke Ellington, toured with Louis Armstrong, discovered Ella Fitzgerald, beat Benny Goodman (with Gene Krupa) and Count Basie (with Billie Holiday) in battle of the bands, encouraged a struggling Dizzy Gillespie, and helmed the first Black band to host a national radio show . . . all before drumming himself to death at age 30. The screening will be followed by a dance performance and a discussion with Greg Thomas (jazz writer, editor, educator, & broadcast journalist), Bobby Sanabria (Grammy-nominated drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, documentary film producer), Dan Morgenstern (jazz historian, archivist, author) and others.

Film | Pere Portabella's The Silence Before Bach (2007): Spanish Docudrama

This fascinating, charming hybrid of documentary and drama from Spain’s legendary Surrealist, circles the theme of the transformational power of great music. The screen is filled with a subway car of passionate cello-playing musicians; then we’re accompanying a guide who gives tours of Leipzig dressed in full Bach regalia; followed by Mendelssohn’s discovery of sheet music for the “St. Matthew Passion” used as wrapping paper for a chunk of raw meat. By turns funny and serious, poignant, sexy, and refreshing – a nearly unclassifiable film, filled with indelible imagery. 102 min.
