The dancers connect with the values inherited from previous generations, identifying that prejudice comes from fear and lack of understanding, and that acceptance requires a certain amount of courage. Opening Reception |
In the snowy early spring of 2006, photographer Michael Crouser was invited to Sweetwater Ranch in Northwestern Colorado by his friends. Crouser was intrigued and inspired by their work and the authentic if sometimes austere way of life he observed, he found himself drawn not to the ways in which ranching life and work had changed over the years, but rather the constancy.  All of Crouser’s photographs are hand-printed. The artist believes how you say something is just as important as what you say, and tactile photography is part of his personal expression.

Book Discussion |
Dutch rule in New Amsterdam and New Netherland (1609-1664) was short in comparison to other colonial empires, but it has had a lasting cultural impact seen in present-day street names, cities monuments, and more. A new book, Dutch New York Histories, authored and presented by members of the Mapping Slavery Project, explores the connections between African, Native American, and Dutch heritage. This eye-opening guide also focuses on traces of the Dutch presence still visible in New York City and state from the early 17th century forward, including relevant locations where the histories of Native Americans and Africans converge in and around New York City. Don't miss this conversation exploring this little known and important history.

Hammond B3 organist Greg Lewis has so devoted himself to the mastery of his instrument that he is known as an “organ monk.” His “encyclopedic knowledge” of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk’s repertory was seemingly made for the conception of Lewis’ Organ Monk CD trilogy in which he transfers Monk’s compositions (plus a few originals) to the Hammond B3 organ. More than just an all-too-perfect title, the project has received universally rave reviews, noting not only top-notch performances, but also the thoughtful and original treatment of this popular material. Harmonically complex and immediately accessible, classic and freshly inspired, “filthy and graceful” (The New York Times), this is a showcase of wildly successful contradictions not to be missed.
