Provocative, prodigal darling of the dance world, Stefanie Batten Bland began her career in New York City, crossed the Atlantic and took roots in Europe for more than a decade, and then returned to Manhattan to lead her troupe, SBB Company, to dizzying heights of inventiveness. Since founding the ensemble in 2008 in France, the company has received widespread praise; Batten Bland’s daring direction is at once fearless yet subtle, savagely bold and remarkably nuanced. Back in NYC since 2011, SBB productions feature original art, music and bespoke movements informed by the various venues the dancers inhabit. The New York Times praised SBB Co. for their “full bodied movement… if the Matrix franchise had a dance company this would be it.” With too many esteemed awards to list, SBB is recognized as an eminent standout in the heart-pounding field of intrepid dance.
