Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Dec. 12, 2017.

Workshop | Urban Sketching Workshop

Urban sketching has become a popular pursuit. Bryant park is an ideal location for this workshop because of the variety of people and activities within it and the architecture that surrounds it. Using a “scribble and refine” approach to drawing, with a simple ink pen, will build confidence. Practice how to really “see” what is in front of us, and capture it on the page by looking at shapes instead of objects, and exploring the spaces and connections between things. Adding words, collage and color will help you learn to fill the page and create a visual diary of the world around us. Learn to record the story of your life through sketches. An accomplished watercolor artist, instructor Marilyn Rose is a signature member of many art organizations including the Catharine Lorillard Wolf Art Club, The Northeast Watercolor Club and The New Jersey Water Color Club. She has won numerous awards in juried shows and plein air events, teaches regular classes in the tri-state area at the Art School at the Old Church in Demarest, NJ and is often asked to give workshops and demonstrations.

Discussion | Murder, Murder, Everywhere

A discussion featuring Patricia King (aka Annamaria Alfieri), Kelly Garrett and Triss Stein. Annamaria Alfieri is author of three historical mysteries set in South America. Of the first of her Africa series, Strange Gods, placed in British East Africa, 1911, the Richmond Times-Dispatch said “the flair of Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham, the cunning of Agatha Christie and Elspeth Huxley."; Kellye Garrett spent 8 years working in Hollywood, including a stint writing for the CBS drama Cold Case. People were always surprised to learn what she did for a living—probably because she seemed way too happy to be brainstorming ways to murder people. Triss Stein is a smalltown girl from New York farm country who has spent most of her adult life in Brooklyn. She writes mysteries about different Brooklyn neighborhoods a and their unique histories, in her ever-fascinating, ever-changing, ever-challenging adopted home. In the new book, Brooklyn Wars, her heroine, Erica Donato, is researching the proud history and slow death of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, when crime gets in the way.
