A playful, imaginative, and visually arresting work, The Seven Ravens celebrates the resilience, imagination, resourcefulness, and tenacity of children living through displacement, separation, and dreams of reunion in the face of great odds, shedding light on one of today's most pressing sociopolitical issues through the lenses of allegory, fantasy, and play. Concert | Exploring Contrast: Original Works for Oud & Piano

Composer and oud player Fuat Tokgozol, leads an evening of original works for oud and piano. The performance centers the oud’s melodic language and timbre, tracing connections between makam-based forms and jazz-informed harmony and rhythm. Themes unfold into improvisation, moving through shifting meters, unmetered openings, and groove-driven passages that place the oud’s voice at the forefront. Joined by pianist Jemina Brechoire, whose parts frame and extend the harmonic landscape while keeping the focus on the oud’s lines and ornamentation. The pieces explore contrast—drone and counterpoint, resonance and attack, fixed motifs and open sections—to show how these two instruments converse without settling into a single genre. A brief post-performance segment will offer context on the oud’s tuning and how improvisation functions in makam for listeners interested in the mechanics behind the set.
