Talk | Understanding Political Expression Online & Russia's "Foreign Agent" Label (In Person AND Online!)

Postdoctoral researcher Kristina Pedersen presents findings from a study that exploits the temporal variation in Russia’s “foreign agent” labelling to investigate how repression impacts political expression online in (1) the content produced by those labelled as political pariahs, and (2) user engagement with the “suspect” content. Using a quasi-experimental research design on over 200,000 YouTube videos and more than 100 million adjacent comments posted between 2014 and 2023, reserchers find that targeted actors not only retain their online presence but also increase their level of regime criticism. In contrast, users substantially reduce their comment engagement with the targeted creators’ content. These findings indicate that regime deterrence signals can effectively stifle online engagement with politically sensitive content while simultaneously fostering political dissent.

Lecture | Award-Winning Artist Talks on Her "Psychologically Charged" Paintings

Fall 2025 Alex Katz Chair in Painting Vera Iliatova gives an artist talk about her work: psychologically charged images that often depict women at instances of impending melodramas either with each other or within themselves, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty in the painterly mise-en-scène they are populating. As she moves through memory and time, Iliatova’s self-portraiture method anchors the dreamlike imagery of her paintings. She describes the vicissitudes of her younger self as “ciphers, stand-ins, imposters, and actresses.” The hybrid environments they inhabit mirror the changes in modern spaces; whether postindustrial cities, cryptic boarding schools, or suburban landscapes. Iliatova’s employment of naturism and emotive color schemes aid in an oscillation between the observational and, in the artist’s words “an anxious frenzied fête galante.” She intertwines elements of hyperrealism with fantastical narratives, weaving a tapestry that delves into the depths of memory, identity, and the subconscious.

Inspired by time spent on her mother-island of Sicily, this program invites listeners into a musical meditation on the energy of the earth. Through works by Beethoven, Stravinsky, Fazil Say, Sheila Silver and others, TERRA reimagines classical music not as distant or cerebral, but as a living, physical and elemental force that connects us to nature and to ourselves.

Reading | Celebrate the Translation of Award-Winning Author Pierre Guyotat's Memoir, Idiocy (In Person AND Online!)

To mark the U.S. release of Pierre Guyotat’s, newly translated by Peter Behrman de Sinéty and forthcoming from the New York Review Books, enjoy an evening of readings and conversation exploring the legacy of the radical, experimental French writer. Published in French in 2018 and awarded the Prix Médicis (the French literary award), Idiocy is a searing autobiographical account of Guyotat’s formative years, his rebellion against familial and military authority, and his imprisonment during the Algerian War. Blending linguistic experimentation with a meditation on state violence, eroticism, and the possibility of artistic resistance, the memoir is both an indictment of colonial domination and the formal culmination of a literary vision that Edmund White once described as belonging to “one of the few geniuses of our day.”

Reading | Vigil & Readings of Resistance Writers/Activists: Gilles Deleuze, Frantz Fanon, & Pier Paolo Pasolini

In this vigil, the names Deleuze, Fanon, and Pasolini will be invoked not so much in their individual capacities, but as a collective force, a revolutionary assemblage. 2025 marks 100 years since the births of Gilles Deleuze and Frantz Fanon, and also 50 years since the murder of Pier Paolo Pasolini. More than a confluence of dates, this is a confluence of some of the most consequential contributions to renewed practices of liberation in critical thinking, art making, and anti-colonial, anti-fascist resistance. Organizers read selected texts from the three authors, vocalizing Deleuze's, Fanon's, and Pasolini's critical vigilance and vital militance, their belief in the world and in art as a powerful anti-fascist, anti-colonialist, and anti-homophobic weapon. The weapon, of course, always conceived as collective line of flight, as aberrant movement, as poetry, as music, as image, as a beautiful thing: life.

Author Reading | Art Historian Discusses Her New Book on Socially Engaged Public Art

Enjoy a talk by art historian/writer Katia Arfara on her new book, Curating the Commons: Socially Engaged Public Art. Since the 2008–2009 financial crisis, the subsequent uprisings in the Global South and the Occupy movements around the globe, artists have increasingly turned to socially engaged art to create new models of artistic production and community engagement. Arfara explores this shift through an in-depth study of performance-centered public projects she curated in Athens at a time when the city stood at the crossroads of sociopolitical, economic, and migration crises in the Global South. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s theories of social space and the right to the city, alongside current debates on the commons, Arfara proposes a slow curatorial approach in response to socio-ecological urgencies. Her book contributes to a broader effort to resist processes of exclusion and segregation and reclaim public space as a commons.

Discussion | Prize-Winning Writer Discusses His New Book, The Twilight of Bohemia: Westbeth and the Last Artists in New York

Celebrate Peter Trachtenberg’s The Twilight of Bohemia: Westbeth and the Last Artists in New York, as Trachtenberg appears in conversation with writer Francine Prose, artist Howard Michels and writer/curator Sur Rodney (Sur) to tackle the larger question of what “Downtown” means at this precarious cultural moment. Moderated by Ava Chin, American Studies Certificate Program. What is “Downtown” NYC? Is it the Abstract Expressionists’ West 9th Street, or the Soho and Tribeca of succeeding generations of artists? Is it the East Village of the St. Mark’s Poetry Project, the Nuyorican Poets’ Café or the Bowery of CBGB? Is it Williamsburg, Bushwick, or Ridgewood? Is Downtown synonymous with the avant-garde or any art movement in its nascency? Is it the interval between the time an art movement becomes a scene and the time it becomes a commodity?
