Book Discussion | Understanding the Shared Idea of Progrees through the New Book, Progress & Regression

Rahel Jaeggi will be joined by Michele Moody-Adams (Columbia University), Jay Bernstein (The New School), and Jeff Flynn (Fordham University), for a panel discussion to celebrate the English translation of Jaeggi’s award-winning book, Progress and Regression. Progress and Regression: “argues that we are lost without a shared idea of progress. In the tradition of critical theory, Rahel Jaeggi defends a vision of progress that avoids Eurocentric and teleological distortions. Progress here is not an inevitable developmental trend but a kind of compass directing society’s never-ending journey toward emancipation. A nimble practitioner of dialectical reasoning, Jaeggi revitalizes progress by confronting its opposite: regression. Her analysis—sober and thoughtful, but urgent—reckons with the myriad signs of regression today, including growing inequality, ecological destruction, and above all the assault on educational institutions, critical thinking, and reason itself.”

Jazz | Homage to Poland's Legendary "Bikini Boys" & Polish Jazz Classics

Musicans pay homage to Poland's legendary "Bikini Boys", who embraced American musical styles in defiance of official communist doctrine, at this special concert featuring original interpretations of Polish jazz classics and their own compositions. These musicians present original interpretations of the band's work, alongside jazz standards and their own compositions--offering a fresh and dynamic take on both classic and contemporary jazz. The term "Bikini Boys" was coined in postwar Poland as a nickname--sometimes with irony, sometimes with admiration--for a new generation of jazz musicians boldly embracing American musical styles in defiance of official doctrine. At the time, jazz was seen by the communist authorities as a dangerous Western influence: decadent, bourgeois, and ideologically subversive. Yet, despite censorship and repression, these artists found ways to explore and perform jazz, whether in clandestine clubs or within the limits of state-approved dance orchestras--often disguising artistic innovation as mere entertainment.

Most infamously, there were 21 members of the Manouchian Group, who were part of the FTP-MOI (Francs-tireurs et partisans - main-d'oeuvre immigree), the immigrant section of the French Resistance. Book Discussion | Experts Discuss How the Internet Affects the Economy

The legal scholar and former White House official Tim Wu examines how today’s tech giants extract wealth from ordinary citizens and deepen America’s class divide.  In his new book, The Age of Extraction, Tim Wu explores how the internet has instead fueled the rise of new economic hierarchies and widened the wealth gap and deepened inequality. Wu, who famously coined the term “net neutrality,” charts the ascent of dominant tech platforms, the extraordinary power they wield, and the unprecedented ways they extract wealth, data, and attention from us all—reshaping both our economy and our society. Wu will be in conversation with Lina Khan, former Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, to discuss how society can reclaim control of our digital lives to build a fairer, more balanced economy.

Something of a companion piece to 2009’s Bluets, Pathemata merges a pain diary chronicling a decade of jaw pain with dreams and dailies, eventually blurring the lines between embodied, unconscious, and everyday life."
