Classical Music | Acclaimed Composer & Musician Ljova's Original Works a New Instrument: The Fadolín (In Person AND Online!)

Ljova's (Lev Zhurbin) solo project, “Enter the Fadolín” introduces a new instrument into the classical cannon -- the fadolín — that combines the range of the violin, viola and most of the cello, in one unique sonority. Since 2020, Ljova has been building a repertoire for the unaccompanied fadolín, adapting music by J.S. Bach (originally written for the keyboard), Bach's Irish contemporary Turlough O’Carolan (originally performed on the folk harp), a popular theme by Dvořák originally written for the orchestra, and many pieces written especially for this unique, haunting new instrument, by Ljova himself. Ljova divides his time between composing for the concert stage, contemporary dance & film, leading his own ensemble LJOVA AND THE KONTRABAND, performing with and composing for TRIO FADOLÍN, as well as a busy career as a fadolínist, violist, and musical arranger. Among recent projects is a film score for the National Geographic, commissions from the City of London Sinfonia, The Louisville Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, Brooklyn Rider, The Knights, Sybarite5 and A Far Cry, as well arrangements for the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, conductors Gustavo Dudamel and Alondra de la Parra, songwriters Ricky Martin, Natalia Lafourcade and Carlos Vives.

Talk | Artist & Theorist Discusses Her "Dark Play" Creative Process

In this talk, artist and theorist Aliza Shvarts will discuss the broader arc of her practice, and explore how "dark play" can offer an aesthetic and political strategy to navigate increasing forms of censorship. Performance theorist Richard Schechner describes “dark play” as the condition when the performer knows they are performing, but the audience does not. The term also invokes the “dark arts” or clandestine powers attributed to witches as reproductive criminals: women who, as described by Marxist feminist Silvia Federici, not only often helped others manage their reproductive health, but whose speech—insofar as they possessed the power to cast spells or curses—possessed the power to act.  The talk with be followed by a Q&A led by NYU Performance Studies Department Chair and Professor Ann Pellegrini and a reception.

Opening Reception | Exploring Life in East Germany through Harald Hauswald's Photography

Experience the opening of Harald Hauswald: Life in East Germany, an exhibition of Harald Hauswald’s photographic work, curated by photographer Martin Schoeller. The exhibition opening will include an artist talk between Harald Hauswald and Martin Schoeller. Harald Hauswald is one of the most important East German photographers who captured the everyday reality of life in the German Democratic Republic in the late 1970s and 80s with empathy, humor, and precision. The exhibition provides an unembellished look at what life in East Germany looked like before the fall of the Berlin Wall, juxtaposing an often ironic view of the public sphere with intimate glimpses at the private and inner worlds of the GDR’s citizens. A self-proclaimed “chronicler of the East,” Hauswald was constantly observing the system, which in turn was surveilling him. From 1978 until the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hauswald was under constant surveillance by the Stasi, and the contents of his Stasi file are included in this exhibition, highlighting the powerful ways in which Hauswald’s images created an unofficial counter archive to dominant state-propagated ideology and narratives. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16, 2026.

Talk | Learn about Recent German Right-Wing Fiction with Experts

As a genre, the novel seems ill-suited to the whims of the 21st century. What once made writers praise the novel as quintessentially modern—its discursive capaciousness, its ability to incorporate other genres within itself—appears less impressive in the digital age, where new forms are constantly being produced and character-limits reign king. As many a cultural critic has lamented, no one has the attention span to finish a novel anymore. Even if we set aside our current obsession with AI and social media, the novel still seems constitutionally ill-suited to political messaging. The very act of reading a novel stagnates political action: reading takes time, of course, but also demands isolation and a retreat from collective life. And yet, even today, writers are still turning to the novel as a tool for political persuasion. What do these novels understand themselves to be doing? How do they work? By investigating recent political novels in German, especially from the far right, this talk argues that the contemporary political novel is preoccupied with the question of its own efficacy. With Sophie Salvo, Assistant Professor in Germanic Studies and the College at the University of Chicago

Discussion | Prize-Winning Author Discusses Enlightenment Philosophy & Death

This lecture explores the question: What would the Enlightenment look like if we viewed it through the eyes of the philosophers as they were facing death? In The Rest Is Silence: Enlightenment Philosophers Facing Death, Professor of French and prize-winning author Joanna Stalnaker discusses works written at the end of the Old Regime and at the end of their authors’ lives. These works, all written before the French Revolution, cast a retrospective glance over the intellectual movement their authors participated in, and over the authors’ own lives and works.  Stalnaker shows that the beauty of these works stem from their authors’ efforts to give literary form to the fragility of their dying bodies. As they reflected on writing as a means of reaching posterity, Enlightenment philosophers embraced the possibility that neither their names nor their writings would survive long beyond the decomposition of their bodies. They inscribed the silence and nothingness of death into their last works, capturing their sense of an ending rather than the confidence in a glowing future so often attributed to them.

Author Reading | Columbia Writing Professor Celebrates His New Book, Vera or Faith

Columbia Writing Professor Gary Shteyngart reads from his latest book, Vera or Faith: A Novel. Followed by a conversation with Professor Bruce Robbins, English and Comparative Literature. Synopsis: The Bradford-Shmulkin family is falling apart. A very modern blend of Russian, Jewish, Korean, and New England WASP, they love one another deeply but the pressures of life in an unstable America are fraying their bonds. There’s Daddy, a struggling, cash-thirsty editor whose Russian heritage gives him a surprising new currency in the upside-down world of twenty-first-century geopolitics; his wife, Anne Mom, a progressive, underfunded blue blood from Boston who’s barely holding the household together; their son, Dylan, whose blond hair and Mayflower lineage provide him pride of place in the newly forming American political order; and, above all, the young Vera, half-Jewish, half-Korean, and wholly original. Observant, sensitive, and always writing down new vocabulary words, Vera wants only three things in life: to make a friend at school; Daddy and Anne Mom to stay together; and to meet her birth mother, Mom Mom, who will at last tell Vera the secret of who she really is and how to ensure love’s survival in this great, mad, imploding world.
