Opening Reception | In the Mind, Through the Body: photographs and drawings

In the Mind, Through the Body, a two man exhibition featuring photographs and drawings by a German Surrealist artist Hans Bellmer (1902 - 1975) and a Korean Contemporary artist, Keunmin Lee (b. 1982). "If the origin of my work is scandalous, it is because for me, the world is a scandal.” –Hans Bellmer Using his art form as a kind of therapy, Bellmer’s work represents his repressed feelings of frustration and resentment towards his suffocating childhood, his anger towards the police, and his unfulfilled sexual desires. Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, Keunmin Lee committed to use his condition as a visionary power and transformed his hallucinations into sources of pure, creative material. By recognizing imperfections and treating them with compassion, Lee enables the audience to accept his faults as they naturally are.

Book Signing | Kristi Saare Duarte signs her book The Transmigrant

The Transmigrant is a vivid alternative take on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Inspired both by ancient scriptures and relatively new findings, the book explores Jesus's life during the years not mentioned in the Bible. It's a remarkable tale of self-discovery that explores the lost years of Jesus, and a reflection on the lengths to which a man will go to be admired, accepted, and, ultimately, loved. Paul Davids, the director of the movie, Jesus in India, calls The Transmigrant "Brilliant," and a "vibrant living tapestry that humanizes Jesus in a way [that] we have not seen in religious literature since Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, or Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet." Kristi Saare Duarte has spent her life traveling the world and chasing adventures. Always open to change, she has lived in Sweden, England, Estonia, Spain, and Peru, where she has studied languages, art, and acting, and has had careers in health care management, advertising, and finance.

Opening Reception | On Freedom: photography

The exhibit offers a photographic response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. In the hands of some of the photographers presented in this exhibition, the camera serves as a mirror, reflecting on the stark limitations that make social inequality visible. In others, the camera serves as a tool of liberation—for the body and the mind, and from personal and ecological danger, social constructs, and political limitations.

Celebrate the release of Tony Conrad’s Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain, a previously unreleased recording that documents the piece’s 1972 debut performance at The Kitchen. Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain is the quintessential work of artist/filmmaker/composer Tony Conrad. Comprising both a film installation and minimalist score for amplified strings, it leaps across genre and medium to connect Conrad's revolutionary structural filmmaking with the experiments in long-duration sound that he had begun in the 1960s. For its 1972 premiere, Ten Years featured Conrad on violin, with Rhys Chatham and Laurie Spiegel performing on instruments Conrad had made. At the release event, the recording will play in the theater alongside a sampling of the associated film projections.
