Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Dance Performance | Desire Lines: A Marathon Day of Dancing

Desire Lines is intended to unfold and accumulate over the course of Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener's two-week dance residency at the park. Through this practice, they ask: Can we connect to each other through public space? Can we defy systems of control, find new pathways and move to create better futures? Mitchell and Riener describe Desire Lines as a "site-based improvisation world" inspired by the work and ideas of architect/artist/writer Claude Bragdon, theosophist Annie Besant, and spirit medium/artist Ethel Le Rossignol, as well as "the manifold chaos of mapping a collective consciousness for social change in an urban environment." The practice will culminate on Saturday, July 1 with a marathon day of dancing from 10am-9pm.
