Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Talk | Swindles and Seductions: The Curious Affinity of Sholem Aleichem and Isaac Bashevis Singer

Sholem Aleichem and Isaac Bashevis Singer are each household names, and together, their writing careers spanned virtually the entire twentieth century. Their deep affinity transcends their shared celebrity, though. They defined the Yiddish response to modernity by taking a stance against progress and the other developmental ideals that had powered the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment). Drawing on the speaker Miriam Udal's award-winning book Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque, this talk will explain the central role of various deceptions—the swindle in the case of Sholem Aleichem and the seduction in that of Bashevis Singer—in illustrating a rapidly changing world.

Film | Abderrahmane Sissako's Timbuktu (2014): Oscar nominated drama

A melding of two sensibilities: the otherworldly beauty of an Arabian Nights fairytale and the worst extremes of 21st century religious fundamentalism. Set in Mali, this Academy Award-nominated drama follows a young family of Tuareg shepherds, emphasizing the loving nature of their relationships and the deeply sensual colors, textures, sights, and sounds that define their quotidian existence. Enter a band of radical jihadists whose sharia law forbids listening to Western music, playing soccer, or socializing between the sexes. Defying their rules brings horrendous, even fatal consequences. 7 PM: classic afro-funk, afro-beat, and psychedelic dance music by Super Yamba Band Sundown: Film begins
