Opening Reception | Sto Len's Mapping Mespeatches: Site-Specific Work

An exhibition of site-specific work that highlights the relationship between aesthetic beauty and ugly truth by investigating urban sprawl and the illegal dumping of toxic waste in natural habitats through a series of prints pulled from the surface of Newtown Creek and Corona Park in Queens. Working en plein air from a rowboat, Len uses an original process he calls Tsunaminagahsi — a mix of traditional suminagashi and his own techniques — to print directly off of the water. These works are arresting, psychedelic experiments in marbleized texture and design that reveal a dark, tactile truth of urban pollution in our city’s water.

Workshop | Intro Class - Soul Mending: How to Heal Spiritual Traumas with Soul Retrieval

Traditional shamans view “soul loss”—the wounding of a person’s spirit as a result of trauma, often at an early age—as a leading cause of physical, emotional and psychological dysfunctions. The often-unconscious impulse to numb one’s feelings in order to carry on is the psyche’s survival strategy, but it takes its toll. The shamanic approach to healing this condition is to journey into the inner spirit world, retrieve the lost part of the soul, and reintegrate it into the psyche to return to wholeness. In this class, you’ll learn shamanic techniques for traveling to the spirit world; diagnosing soul-loss symptoms; developing the ability to “see” the source of our own and others’ traumas, and performing soul retrieval. With: Itzhak Beery, a NYC-based shamanic practitioner, performs ceremonial healing and teaches in the U.S., Europe, and Israel. He trained intensively with the Ecuadorian indigenous and contemporary shamans and is a co-founder of the NY Shamanic Circle.
